01V086000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Antilock/Traction Control/Electronic Limited Slip

Reported: 2001-03-14 (March 14, 2001) · Model years: 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTOR HOMES BUILT ON FREIGHTLINER CHASSIS. THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) REAR BRAKE VALVES CAN BE DAMAGED DUE TO THE FRESH WATER TANK SAGGING DOWNWARD.

Consequence: THIS WILL RESULT IN AUTOMATIC APPLICATION OF THE EMERGENCY BRAKE CAUSING A RAPID DECELERATION AND STOPPING OF THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A STEEL SUPPORT BRACKET THAT RUNS FORE AND AFT UNDER THE FRESH WATER TANK BETWEEN TWO CHASSIS CROSS MEMBERS BELOW THE TANK. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 19, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT AIRSTREAM AT 1-877-596-6505.

Consequence: DAMAGED STEEL LPG LINES COULD RESULT IN A LEAK THAT COULD CAUSE A FIRE OR EXPLOSION, RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A STEEL SUPPORT BRACKET THAT RUNS FORE AND AFT UNDER THE FRESH WATER TANK BETWEEN TWO CHASSIS CROSS MEMBERS BELOW THE TANK. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 19, 2001. Remedy: DEALERS WILL RE-ENFORCE THE REAR FLOOR SUPPORT WITH A SUPPORT LEG WELDED TO A STEEL TUBE. THE OLD LEGS WILL BE LEFT IN PLACE AND THE NEW SUPPORT LEG FITTED OVER THE FLOOR SUPPORT TUBE, AND THE SUPPORT WELDED IN PLACE AT THE FLOOR SUPPORT TUBE AND THE CHASSIS RAIL. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MARCH 19, 2001. Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
