Recall history

5 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

87V026000 · Power Train:Transfer Case (4-Wheel Drive)

Reported: 1987-01-05 (January 5, 1987) · Model years: 1984, 1985, 1986

NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH MAY BECOME PERMANENTLY CLOSED, ALLOWING VEHICLE TO BE STARTED IN ANY GEAR.

Consequence: LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL COULD RESULT.

Remedy: INSTALL DECAL WARNING DRIVER TO ENGAGE PARK BRAKE AND TO SHIFT TRANSMISSION TO NEUTRAL PRIOR TO STARTING ENGINE. ALSO, INSTALL A WATERPROOF SAFETY SWITCH TO REPLACE NEUTRAL SWITCH.

88V183000 · Electrical System:Wiring

Reported: 1988-11-23 (November 23, 1988) · Model years: 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988

THE MILITARY NATO SLAVE RECEPTACLE IS NOT WATERPROOF AND WHEN SUBMERGED IN WATER A CURRENT PATH IS CREATED.

Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN A DIRECT ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUITAND THE POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD OF THE NATO SLAVE RECEPTACLE.

Remedy: DISCONNECT NATO SLAVE RECEPTACLE TO PREVENT FIRE HAZARD.

89V195000 · Electrical System:Wiring

Reported: 1989-11-08 (November 8, 1989) · Model years: 1987, 1988, 1989

THE NATO SLAVE RECEPTACLE MAY BE INCORRECTLY INSTALLED WITH AN INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE SHELL.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
91V030000 · Seat Belts:Front:Retractor

Reported: 1991-02-19 (February 19, 1991) · Model years: 1990, 1991

AUTOMATIC SHOULDER BELT RETRACTION MECHANISM DOES NOT FULLY RETRACT THE BELT AFTER IT IS EXTENDED, EITHER BY MOVEMENT OF THE UPPER TORSO OR AFTER REMOVAL BY OCCUPANT.

Consequence: SEAT BELT SHOULDER HARNESS WOULD NOT PROVIDE ADEQUATEPROTECTION TO OCCUPANT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

Remedy: REPLACE THE WASHER BETWEEN THE SHOULDER BOLT AND UPPER MOUNTING BRACKET WITH SMALLER WASHER; THIS WILL ALLOW RETRACTOR TO OPERATE.

I AM A MEMBER OF THE NATIONAL GUARD AND I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFETY OF MANY SOLDIERS, IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT MANY OF THE MILITARY HUMVEE VEHICLES THAT WE DRIVE ON PUBLIC HIGHWAYS AND INTERSTATE ROADS ARE NOT EQUIPPED FOR SUCH USE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHEN THE DOT KNEW THIS AND IF THERE WAS ANYTHING DONE ABOUT THIS. *LA

MINNESOTA WILL NOT GRANT A TITLE, THEY TELL ME THIS VEHICLE WAS NOT DESIGNED FOR ON HIGHWAY USE. HOWEVER, THE FEDERAL, STATE, LOCAL GOVERNMENTS RUN THEM ON THE ROADS EVERYDAY. MANY OTHER STATES ALLOW THIS VEHICLE TO BE SAFELY RAN ON THEIR ROADS.

CAR STALLED ON LEFT TURN. CAR BACKED UP AND DARTED OUT INTO TRAFFIC RUNNING INTO MY FRIEND AND I ON THE BACK OF HIS MOTORCYCLE. THE ACCIDENT KILLED TWO AND SEVERELY INJURED ME. THE 1984 CHEVROLET CITATION HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE FLOATER INTAKE VALVE CAUSING IT TO STALL ON A LEFT. INVESTIGATORS MISSED THIS DETAIL. I AM IN CONSTANT PAIN AND I AM HAVING TROUBLE USING THIS WEB SITE. I HAVE SUFFERED BRAIN DAMAGE BESIDES THE BROKEN AND CRUSHED BONES THAT THE ACCIDENT LEFT ME WITH. *NM

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
