Recall history
3 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.
98V248000 · Wheels
Reported: 1998-10-07 (October 7, 1998) · Model years: 1998, 1999
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: TRANSIT AND SCHOOL BUSES BUILT WITH THE REAR AXLE FIVE-SPOKE CAST STYLE WHEEL ASSEMBLIES, CODES 28A002, 28A003, 28A006, AND 28A007. THESE ASSEMBLIES HAVE MIS-MATCHED WHEEL SPACER AND CLAMPS, WHICH COULD CAUSE HIGH STRESS ON THE WHEEL STUDS.
Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN RESULT IN POTENTIAL WHEEL STUD FAILURES, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A REPAIR KIT AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS.
NHTSA campaign record ↗98V123000 · Steering: Steering Wheel/Handle Bar
Reported: 1998-06-02 (June 2, 1998) · Model years: 1999
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SCHOOL AND TRANSIT BUSES EQUIPPED WITH 2-PIECE, NO5X7508 TILTING STEERING COLUMN, OR NO5X710 TELESCOPIC AND TILTING STEERING COLUMN. THE UPPER PINCH BOLT NUT WAS OMITTED DURING THE ASSEMBLY PROCESS. IF THE NUT WAS NOT INSTALLED, THE BOLT CAN SEPARATE FROM THE UNIVERSAL JOINT.
Consequence: THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A VEHICLE CRASH.
Remedy: OWNERS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A FREE REPAIR KIT AND INSTRUCTIONS TO REMEDY THIS CONDITION. IF AN OWNER SO DESIRES, THEIR DEALER CAN PERFORM THE REMEDY FOR THEM.
NHTSA campaign record ↗99V038000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic
Reported: 1999-03-01 (March 1, 1999) · Model years: 1999
TRANSIT AND SCHOOL BUSES. SOME REAR BRAKE ASSEMBLIES WERE BUILT USING INCORRECT MOUNTING HARDWARE. IMPROPER TORQUE OF THE FASTENER OR FASTENERS THAT RETAIN THE BRAKES TO THE REAR AXLE COULD ALLOW BRAKE GROUPS TO SEPARATION FROM THE REAR AXLE.
Consequence: SEPARATION OF THE REAR AXLE COULD CAUSE A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS/OWNERS WILL INSPECT THE MOUNTING HARDWARE AND REPLACE THE LOCK NUTS IF NECESSARY.

Problems by model year
Model-wide comparison of the eight most reported components across the model. Cells show counts and shares within each model year. Open a cell for source examples.

Darker cells indicate a larger share of submitted complaints. Components overlap. This measures complaint composition, not failure probability.
Failure mileage by component
Median and middle 50% of usable owner-reported mileages. Ranges require at least five records.

Emerging complaint spikes
Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.
This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.
No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
Equal-age model-year comparison
Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
1998: 0 complaints · 1999: 0 complaints
| Model year | Through age 0 | Through age 1 | Through age 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1998 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 1999 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Date coverage across each selected cohort
| Year | Incident dates used | Filing date fallbacks | Excluded dates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1998 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 1999 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
Components reported together
Each cell counts unique complaints naming both components. Open a nonzero cell for examples.

Co-reporting does not establish that one component caused another concern.
Recurring narrative patterns
