TO WHOM THIS MAY CONCERN: I OWN A BMW 325XI 2001 MANUAL. A MANUAL SHIFTER IS DESIGNED TO GO TO THE MIDDLE WHEN IT IS IN NEUTRAL. THIS PROBLEM I HAVE CAUSES THE STICK SHIFT TO GO TO THE RIGHT (NEAR FIFTH GEAR) AND STAY THERE. I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND SHIFTED INTO THE WRONG GEAR BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM. I ALMOST BLEW THE ENGINE AND LOST CONTROL OF MY CAR. THIS IS A BIG SAFETY HAZARD. IF THE STICK SHIFT DOES NOT RETURN TO WHERE IT IS DESIGNED TO BE, THE DRIVE CAN GET CONFUSED RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT. I HAVE DONE A LOT OF RESEARCH ONLINE AND I H…

OUR PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE SIMILIAR TO ODI NOS. 402200 AND 404275. WE BOUGHT THE CAR USED (PRIVATE SALE). THE ABS WAS NOT WORKING DUE TO BEING IN AN ACCIDENT. THE DEALER HAS REPLACED THE HYDRAULIC PUMP (WHICH WAS NOT WORKING), THE CONTROL MODULE (WHICH WAS WORKING), GONE OVER ALL THE WIRING IN DETAIL (WITH SCOPE). THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE ABS PUMP IS NOW ACTIVATING ALL THE TIME, EVEN WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED. DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS?*AK

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
