Recall history

1 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

01V352000 · Tires:Sidewall

Reported: 2001-11-26 (November 26, 2001) · Model years: 2002

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: DURING THE TIRE MOUNTING PROCESS ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES BUILT WITH STANDARD (NON-SPORT) SUSPENSION AND EQUIPPED WITH CONTINENTAL CONTITOURINGCONTACT CH95 ECOPLUS TIRES, SIZE 225/65R16 95H, HAVING DOT CODES 4001, 4101, OR 4201, THE OUTER SIDEWALL SURFACE OF THE TIRES MAY HAVE BEEN CUT BY A SHARP EDGE. OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME COULD LEAD TO A REDUCTION OF INFLATION PRESSURE.

Consequence: CONTINUED DRIVING WITH LOW INFLATION PRESSURE IN THE TIRE COULD ULTIMATELY RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE TIRE, AFFECT VEHICLE HANDLING AND CONTROL, AND COULD IN SOME CASES RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT ALL FIVE TIRES FOR A POSSIBLE CUT IN THE SIDEWALL, AND IF A CUT IS FOUND, THE TIRE WILL BE REPLACED. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 10, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.

APPROXIMATELY ONE AND A HALF HOURS AFTER ARRIVING AT WORK THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT CAUGHT ON FIRE. THE CAR WAS PARKED, NOT RUNNING, SITTING IN A PARKING SPACE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT FELT THAT THE FIRE ORIGINATED BEHIND AND BELOW THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY. THERE APPEARS TO BE SOME KIND OF FAN/BLOWER LOCATED IN THAT AREA JUST AHEAD OF THE PASSENGER FRONT TIRE. THE WEATHER WAS GOOD, NO PRECIPITATION AND APPROXIMATELY 60 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. *JS

REVERSE DRUM FOR TRANSMISSION WENT OUT UNEXPECTEDLY AT 89,000 MILES. MANY OTHERS ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE, BUT BMW HAS FAILED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE DEFECT IN THE PART WHICH BREAKS DUE TO THE METAL PIECE BEING TOO THIN. NO RECALLS EITHER. BMW SHOULD BE FORCED RECALL THIS PART, AS IT COSTS $6,000 TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION, AND $3,500 TO HAVE IT REBUILT BECAUSE OF THIS DEFECTIVE PART. *TR

MY COMPLAINT IS THE NEW XENON HEADLIGHTS ON AUTOMOBILES. THE ARE SO BRIGHT THAT I AM CONTINUALLY BLINDED BY ONCOMING VEHICLES HAVING THEM. THERE IS REALLY NO NEED FOR SUCH OVERLY BRIGHT HEADLIGHTS, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE HAZARD THEY POSE TO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THERE MUST BE SOMETHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO MINIMIZE THE EFFECT OF THESE LIGHTS.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
