Reported: 2010-07-20 (July 20, 2010) · Model years: 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009

BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN 2005 THROUGH 2009 R 1200 RT POLICE MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 2005 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 2009. THE BRACKET WHICH SUPPORTS THE AUDIBLE SIGNALING DEVICE CAN BREAK, POSSIBLY ALLOWING THE SIGNALING DEVICE TO FALL FROM THE VEHICLE AND ONTO THE ROADWAY.

Consequence: SHOULD THE SIGNALING DEVICE FALL FROM THE MOTORCYCLE WHILE BEING DRIVEN ON THE ROADWAYS, IT COULD BECOME AN OBSTACLE FOR OTHER DRIVERS WHICH MAY RESULT IN A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL ATTACH TWO TETHER CABLES TO THE DEVICE IN ORDER TO SECURE IT TO THE MOTORCYCLE IN THE EVENT THE MOUNTING BRACKET BECOMES LOOSE. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 2, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.

UPON STARTING MY BIKE BEFORE GOING FOR A RIDE, I NOTICED THAT IT DEVELOPED AN EXTREME FUEL LEAK. IT LITERALLY SPRAYS GASOLINE LIKE A LAWN SPRINKLER. I HAVE CHECKED BLOGS ON THIS MATTER AND HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. I HAVE VIDEO OF MY BIKE DOING THIS IN CASE YOU NEED IT. THIS IS POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
