Recall history

2 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

76V164000 · Power Train:Manual Transmission

Reported: 1976-10-14 (October 14, 1976) · Model years: 1977

91V107000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Foundation Components:Hoses, Lines/Piping, And Fittings

Reported: 1991-06-18 (June 18, 1991) · Model years: 1988

FRONT BRAKE HYDRAULIC LINE MAY CONTACT AND RUB AGAINST FUEL TANK OR SPEEDOMETER CABLE RESULTING IN SCUFFING AND SUBSEQUENT WEARING ON BRAKE LINES OUTER SURFACE WHICH COULD CAUSE A HYDRAULIC FLUID LEAK. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: HYDRAULIC FLUID LEAK DUE TO THE DAMAGED LINES IMPAIRS BRAKE PERFORMANCE.

Remedy: A SPIRAL HOSE TO PROTECT THE BRAKE LINE FROM CONTACT WILL BE INSTALLED, AS WELL AS A HOSE CLAMP AND SUPPORT, SO BRAKE LINE WILL NOT CHANGE.

I DON'T KNOW WHERE ELSE TO REQUEST HELP ON THIS PROBLEM. I HAVE A 1978 R100RS BMW MOTORCYCLE (NOT LISTED IN YOUR DATA BASE, SO I CHOSE THE R100 9999 ENTRY FROM THE DROP DOWN MENU.) VIN [XXX] I'M VERY FAMILIAR WITH THESE MOTORCYCLES, HAVING OWNED 5 BMWS. THIS BIKE WAS KNOWN TO HAVE A RECALLED FRONT WHEEL (MAG WHEEL COULD FRACTURE). WHEN I BOUGHT THIS BIKE, I ASSUMED IT HAD BEEN REPLACED. IT HAD NOT. WHEN I CONTACTED BMW CORPORATE IN NEW JERSEY THEY TOLD ME THEY WERE NO LONGER REQUIRED TO REPLACE THE WHEEL, AS HAD BEEN THE CASE DURING THE RECALL…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
