KNOWN ISSUE WITH THIS AND OTHER BMW MOTORCYCLE MODELS WITH THE "QUICK DISCONNECT" FITTINGS ON FUEL LINES BEING MADE OF PLASTIC AND FAILING CAUSING OR POSSIBLY CAUSING FIRE. ON THIS DATE ONE OF MY FITTINGS FAILED CAUSING FUEL TO LEAK ON TO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AND BURNED OFF UNDER HIGH HEAT MAYBE CAUSING FIRE. I WAS ABLE TO GET SOMETHING UNDER LEAK TO CATCH FUEL BEFORE IT ALL LEAKED OUT ON TO EXHAUST. ALL MODELS OF BMW WITH THESE POOR DESIGN PLASTIC FITTINGS ON THE FUEL SYSTEM {{MUST}} BE REPLACED! THIS NEEDS TO BE REQUIRED ASAP.

ON OR AROUND OCTOBER 13, 2014 WHILE RIDING THE 2003 BMW R1200CL TO WORK,MY RIGHT SADDLEBAG OPENED AT 45MPH. AT FIRST, I THOUGHT I HAD NOT LATCHED IT PROPERLY. WHEN I PULLED OVER, I FOUND THE LOCKING MECHANISM HAD FAILED AND THERE WAS NO WAY OF LATCHING IT. I "BUNGIE CORDED" IT CLOSED AND RETURNED HOME TO GET MY CAR. I'VE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THIS FAILURE AND HAVE FOUND IT'S VERY COMMON IN THIS MODEL RANGE. IT SEEMS TO ALWAYS BE THE RIGHT SADDLEBAG. Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
