Recall history

10 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

75V129000 · Equipment:Mechanical:Carrier/Rack

Reported: 1975-07-14 (July 14, 1975) · Model years: 1975

NHTSA campaign record ↗
78V242000 · Suspension:Front:Wheel Bearing

Reported: 1978-11-06 (November 6, 1978) · Model years: 1975

UNDER CERTAIN DRIVING CONDITIONS, INCLUDING EXTENDED SEVERE BRAKING, THE WHEEL BEARING AREA MAY ENCOUNTER TEMPERATURES THAT CAN CAUSE THE GREASE TO MIGRATE OUT OF THE BEARING AREA. THIS WILL REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF LUBRICATION AVAILABLE TO THE BEARINGS AND RESULT IN FRONT WHEEL BEARING FAILURE AND SPINDLE DAMAGE.

Remedy: THE DEALER WILL REPLACE THE FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS AND ASSOCIATED PARTS ON ALL INVOLVED VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE.

79V081000 · Engine And Engine Cooling:Engine

Reported: 1979-03-30 (March 30, 1979) · Model years: 1977, 1978

OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE IN A MANNER WHICH PRODUCES HARD BOTTOMING OUT OF THE FRONT SUSPENSION MAY CAUSE DEFORMATION OF THE LEFT ENGINE MOUNT SUPPORT STRUCTURE AND ALLOW THE ENGINE MOUNT BRACKET TO CONTACT THE STEERING PITMAN ARM OR STEERING LINKAGE.

Remedy: AN ENGINE MOUNT SUPPORT BRACKET REINFORCEMENT KIT WILL BE INSTALLED ON THE LEFT FRONT ENGINE MOUNT SUPPORT STRUCTURE WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
78V019000 · Steering: Steering Wheel/Handle Bar

Reported: 1978-01-24 (January 24, 1978) · Model years: 1978

THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT COUPLING ON THE INVOLVED VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN MACHINED OVERSIZED IN THE SERRATION AREA WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE STEERING COLUMN. THIS WOULD PREVENT THE COUPLING FROM PROPERLY TIGHTENING ON THE SHAFT WHEN THE CLAMP AND PINCH BOLT WERE INSTALLED.

Remedy: DEALER WILL REPLACE THE SHAFT COUPLING, IF NECESSARY, WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
79V141000 · Electrical System:Wiring

Reported: 1979-05-06 (May 6, 1979) · Model years: 1979

THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH MAY CAUSE A RANDOM INTERNAL ELECTRICAL SHORT WHICH COULD RESULT IN THE ENGINE STARTING BY ITSELF WHEN THE IGNITION SWITCH IS TURNED TO THE "ON" POSITION.

Remedy: DEALER WILL REPLACE THE OIL PRESSURE SWITCHES ON ALL SUSPECT VEHICLES AT NO COST TO OWNER.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
79V151000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Delivery:Hoses, Lines/Piping, And Fittings

Reported: 1979-06-13 (June 13, 1979) · Model years: 1979

THE CARBURETOR FUEL FEED HOSE MAY NOT HAVE BEEN PROPERLY POSITIONED DURING ASSEMBLY. AS A RESULT THE HOSE COULD COME IN CONTACT WITH OR BE TOO CLOSE TO THE ENGINE EMISSION EXHAUST SYSTEM GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE. THIS CAN CAUSE THE HOSE TO RUPTURE.

Remedy: THE DEALER WILL INSPECT THE FUEL FEED HOSE AND REPOSITION IT, IF NECESSARY. ALSO, ANY DAMAGED HOSE WILL BE REPLACED.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
81V060000 · Seat Belts:Front:Retractor

Reported: 1981-05-19 (May 19, 1981) · Model years: 1980

ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, THE SEAT BELT RETRACTORS IN THE REAR SEATING POSITIONS CONTAIN FIRST LOCK POSITIONS WHICH WILL NOT LOCK WHEN USED BY SMALLER PASSENGERS. THIS FAILS TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 208, "OCCUPANT CRASH PROTECTION".

Remedy: ALL OWNERS WILL BE SENT A PRE-PAID POSTAGE CARD THAT IS TO BE FILLED OUT AND SENT BACK. THE CARD WILL INDICATE WHETHER THE SEAT BELTS ARE FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. IF DEALER INSPECTS SEAT BELTS, THE SEAT BELT RETRACTORS WILL BE REPLACED, IF NECESSARY, WITHOUT CHARGE.

PLEASE PUT FIRESTONE OUT OF BUSINESS. IN 1996-7 (CHEV/MONZA) I HAD FOUR TIRE FAILURES (2 SEPARATE INCIDENCES) WHILE ON THE OPEN ROAD. FIRESTONE REPLACED THE FIRST SET OF FAILED TIRES ON A PRO RATED BASIS. THE SECOND SET FAILED WITH FOUR PERSONS IN THE CAR AT ROAD SPEEDS. IF IT HAD BEEN THE FRONT TIRES, NO DOUBT, MY PASSENGERS AND I WOULDN'T BE HERE TODAY OR ME TO WRITE THIS. AT THE SECOND FAILURE I WAS PREPARED TO DRIVE THROUGH THE FIRESTONE STORE WINDOW INTO THEIR SHOWROOM TO LET THEM KNOW OF MY FRUSTRATION AND THEIR NEGLEGENCE. HAD I DRIV…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
