77V098000 · Suspension:Front:Control Arm:Lower Arm

Reported: 1977-06-22 (June 22, 1977) · Model years: 1975, 1976

THE FRONT SUSPENSION CONTROL ARMS WERE ASSEMBLED WITH BALL JOINTS WHICH MAY CONTAIN SOCKETS THAT WERE NOT PROPERLY HEAT-TREATED. THIS MAY CAUSE THE SOCKET TO WEAR RAPIDLY AND ALLOW THE BALL JOINT STUD TO SEPARATE FROM THE SOCKET, CAUSING EITHER THE LEFT OR RIGHT WHEEL SUSPENSION TO COLLAPSE.

Remedy: DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, WHERE NECESSARY, WILL REPLACE THE BALL JOINTS WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
77V111000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Foundation Components:Master Cylinder

Reported: 1977-07-15 (July 15, 1977) · Model years: 1976, 1977

ON THE INVOLVED VEHICLES, THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER MAY HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED WITH RESERVOIR MOUNTING BOLTS THAT WERE IMPROPERLY PROCESSED. THIS COULD MAKE THESE BOLTS BRITTLE AND SUBJECT TO BREAKING. IF BREAKAGE OCCURS, A BRAKE FLUID LEAK MAY DEVELOP BETWEEN THE RESERVOIR AND MASTER CYLINDER. LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID WOULD ADVERSELY AFFECT VEHICLE BRAKING CAPABILITY.

Remedy: DEALER WILL REPLACE THE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR MOUNTING BOLTS WITH AN IMPROVED TYPE, WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

78V205000 · Parking Brake:Indicator Light

Reported: 1978-09-26 (September 26, 1978) · Model years: 1977, 1978

THE PARKING BRAKE SWITCH CONNECTOR CONTAINS ELECTRICAL WIRES THAT MAY BE REVERSED. AS A RESULT, THE LAMP WILL BE ACTIVATED WHENEVER THE IGNITION IS TURNED ON, EVEN THOUGH THE PARKING BRAKE IS NOT ENGAGED. THIS CONSTITUTES A NON-COMPLIANCE TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 105, "HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEMS". THE STANDARD REQUIRES THAT THE INDICATOR LAMP BE ACTIVATED UPON APPLICATION OF THE PARKING BRAKE.

Remedy: DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, CORRECT THE PARKING BRAKE SWITCH WIRING WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

78V206000 · Equipment:Other:Labels

Reported: 1978-09-26 (September 26, 1978) · Model years: 1977, 1978

THE INVOLVED VEHICLES DO NOT HAVE A BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR WARNING WHICH STATES, "WARNING, CLEAN FILLER CAP BEFORE REMOVING. USE ONLY DOT 3 FLUID FROM A SEALED CONTAINER". THIS CONSTITUTES A NON-COMPLIANCE TO FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 105, "HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEMS".

Remedy: THE DEALER WILL INSTALL THE BRAKE FLUID RESERVOIR WARNING PLATE WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

78V207000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Storage:Tank Assembly

Reported: 1978-09-26 (September 26, 1978) · Model years: 1977, 1978

THE FUEL TANK FUSIBLE BUSHING ELEMENT MAY HAVE MELTED DUE TO EXTREMELY HIGH TEMPERATURES ENCOUNTERED WHEN THE TANKS WERE EXPOSED TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT RAYS DURING CHASSIS STORAGE.

Remedy: THE DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE FUEL TANK VENT PLUG WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
78V019000 · Steering: Steering Wheel/Handle Bar

Reported: 1978-01-24 (January 24, 1978) · Model years: 1978

THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT COUPLING ON THE INVOLVED VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN MACHINED OVERSIZED IN THE SERRATION AREA WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE STEERING COLUMN. THIS WOULD PREVENT THE COUPLING FROM PROPERLY TIGHTENING ON THE SHAFT WHEN THE CLAMP AND PINCH BOLT WERE INSTALLED.

Remedy: DEALER WILL REPLACE THE SHAFT COUPLING, IF NECESSARY, WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
80V153000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Foundation Components:Hoses, Lines/Piping, And Fittings

Reported: 1980-11-20 (November 20, 1980) · Model years: 1980

VEHICLES MAY BE SUBJECT TO ABRASIVE CONTACT BETWEEN THE REAR BRAKE HOSE/PIPE ASSEMBLY AND THE AXLE HOUSING WITH NORMAL BRAKE USAGE AND REAR PAD WEAR. SHOULD THIS CONDITION OCCUR, IT COULD LEAD TO A BRAKE HOSE/PIPE FAILURE, RESULTING IN LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID AND LOSS OF REAR BRAKING ACTION.

Remedy: DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE BRAKE HOSE/PIPE ASSEMBLY AND MOUNTING BRACKETS AT NO CHARGE.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
83V085000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Storage:Tank Assembly:Filler Pipe And Cap

Reported: 1983-09-02 (September 2, 1983) · Model years: 1982

IN A VEHICLE IMPACT FROM THE REAR, THE THREE PIECE HOSES COULD SEPARATE AND RESULT IN FUEL LEAKAGE IN EXCESS OF THE AMOUNT PERMITTED BY FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 301, "FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY".

Remedy: A NEW FUEL FILLER HOSE WILL BE INSTALLED BY DEALER ON ALL INVOLVED VEHICLES.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
85V128000 · Engine And Engine Cooling:Cooling System:Fan

Reported: 1985-10-15 (October 15, 1985) · Model years: 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985

THE FAN BLADE, WHEN SUBJECTED TO HIGH STRESS LEVELS, CAN FATIGUE AND BREAK APART AT THE HUB WHILE THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: IF BREAKAGE OCCURS WHILE HOOD IS OPEN, A PERSON WORKING UNDER THE HOOD OR NEAR THE TRUCK COULD BE STRUCK BY A BLADE PART AND BE INJURED.

Remedy: REPLACE ENGINE FAN.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
84V133000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Storage:Tank Assembly:Filler Pipe And Cap

Reported: 1984-10-16 (October 16, 1984) · Model years: 1984

DUE TO A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL TANK FILLER PIPE, THE FUEL CAP MAY IMPROPERLY SEAL THE END OF THE FILLER PIPE. THIS FAILS TO CONFORM TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD 301, "FUEL SYSTEM INTEGRITY." IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION, AN IMPROPERLY SEALED FILLER PIPE COULD ALLOW FUEL SPILLAGE.

Remedy: THE DEALER WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE FUEL CAPS ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES WITHOUT CHARGE.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
86V117000 · Seats

Reported: 1986-08-25 (August 25, 1986) · Model years: 1984, 1985

THREE BOLTS WHICH ATTACH THE SILL THAT SUPPORTS THE BASE OF THE SEAT WERE OMITTED; THEREFORE VEHICLES DO NOT COMPLY WITH FMVSS 210 AND FMVSS 207. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE FLOOR PLATE COULD BUCKLE ALONG THE INBOARD SIDE CAUSING THE SEAT PEDESTAL TO BE IMBALANCED, AND INCREASING THE LIKELIHOOD OF INJURY TO THE SEAT OCCUPANT.

Remedy: INSTALL MISSING BOLTS.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
85V156000 · Wheels:Rim

Reported: 1985-11-26 (November 26, 1985) · Model years: 1985

THE WHEEL MAY DEVELOP CRACKS BETWEEN THE DISC AND RIM. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: IF THIS OCCURS AND IS NOT NOTICED, THE CRACK COULD INCREASE AROUND THE RIM, RESULTING IN SEPARATION OF THE RIM FROM THE DISC, LOSS OF CONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT MAY OCCUR.

Remedy: REPLACE WHEELS HAVING THE SUSPECTED MANUFACTURING CODE NUMBER.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
86V114000 · Steering:Linkages:Tie Rod Assembly

Reported: 1986-08-18 (August 18, 1986) · Model years: 1985

DURING A COMBINED CORNERING AND BRAKING MANEUVER, THE TIE ROD END COULD CONTACT THE TIRE WALL. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: THIS CONTACT CAN CAUSE GROOVING OF THE TIRE, WHICH COULD EVENTUALLY RESULT IN TIRE FAILURE AND POSSIBLY A VEHICLE CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

Remedy: REPLACE 16" WHEELS AND TIRES WITH 19 1/2" WHEELS AND TIRES; ALSO, REPLACE SPEEDOMETER GEAR TO COMPENSATE FOR NEW SIZE WHEELS AND TIRES.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
88V110000 · Suspension:Front:Control Arm:Lower Arm

Reported: 1988-07-06 (July 6, 1988) · Model years: 1985, 1986

LEFT HAND LOWER CONTROL ARM CAN CRACK AND COULD EVENTUALLY CAUSE THE LOWER BALL JOINT TO SEPARATE FROM THE CONTROL ARM.

Consequence: LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL CAN OCCUR WHICH COULD RESULT INA CRASH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.

Remedy: REPAIR OR REPLACE LOWER LEFT CONTROL ARM.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
90V029000 · Seats

Reported: 1990-02-12 (February 12, 1990) · Model years: 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990

SEAT PEDESTALS FOR DRIVER AND PASSENGERS MAY HAVE A LARGER THAN SPECIFIED SLOT IN THE CENTER CHANNEL.

Consequence: SEAT PEDESTAL MAY NOT MEET LOADING REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS 210.

Remedy: REPLACE SEAT PEDESTALS WITH PEDESTALS HAVING PROPER SLOT SIZE.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
