78V038000 · Steering: Steering Wheel/Handle Bar

Reported: 1978-02-17 (February 17, 1978) · Model years: 1978

AN INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT CONTAINING A MISMATCHED POT COUPLING ASSEMBLY MAY HAVE BEEN INSTALLED ON THE INVOLVED VEHICLES. THIS COUPLING MAY HAVE AN OVERSIZED SERRATION DIAMETER. AN OVERSIZED SERRATION COULD PREVENT THE COUPLING FROM ADEQUATELY TIGHTENING ONTO THE GEAR OR SHAFT SPLINES.

Remedy: THE DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, INSTALL A REPLACEMENT SHAFT COUPLING.

78V141000 · Steering:Hydraulic Power Assist:Hose, Piping, And Connections

Reported: 1978-06-14 (June 14, 1978) · Model years: 1978

IMPROPER ROUTING OF THE "HYDROBOOST" HYDRAULIC SYSTEM HIGH PRESSURE HOSE ASSEMBLY COULD ALLOW A TUBULAR SECTION TO CONTACT THE FRAME SIDE RAIL. ABRASION FROM THE CONTACT COULD RESULT, CAUSING A LEAK IN THE HOSE ASSEMBLY.

Remedy: THE DEALER WILL REROUTE "HYDROBOOST" HIGH PRESSURE HOSE ASSEMBLIES AND ANY DAMAGED HOSES WILL BE REPLACED.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
78V188000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Foundation Components:Hoses, Lines/Piping, And Fittings

Reported: 1978-08-29 (August 29, 1978) · Model years: 1978

DUE TO IMPROPER MATERIAL CONSTRUCTION THE HYDRO-BOOST FLUID RETURN HOSE MAY NOT BE CAPABLE OF WITHSTANDING THE TEMPERATURES AND/OR PRESSURES EXPERIENCED WITH THE HYDRO-BOOST SYSTEM. ALSO, THE HYDRO-BOOST FLUID HIGH PRESSURE HOSE ASSEMBLY MAY HAVE BEEN MISLOCATED, ALLOWING THE ASSEMBLY TO CONTACT THE FRAME SIDE RAIL. ABRASION RESULTING FROM CONTINUED CONTACT ALONG WITH IMPROPER MATERIAL CONSTRUCTION MAY CAUSE PRESSURE HOSE FAILURE. EITHER OF THESE CONDITIONS MAY CAUSE HYDRO-BOOST FLUID LEAKAGE, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF POWER ASSIST FOR THE STEERING AND BRAKING SYSTEMS. COMPLETE LOSS OF STEERING OR BRAKING WILL NOT OCCUR SINCE BOTH SYSTEMS WOULD REVERT TO MANUAL OPERATION.

Remedy: THE DEALER WILL INSTALL A HYDRO-BOOST FLUID RETURN HOSE CONSTRUCTED FORM THE PROPER MATERIAL, POSITIONING THE HOSE ASSEMBLY TO ENSURE ADEQUATE CLEARANCE BETWEEN IT AND THE FRAME SIDE RAIL.

NHTSA campaign record ↗

Reported: 1987-03-26 (March 26, 1987) · Model years: 1987

PLASTIC HYDRAULIC CLUTCH SYSTEM COMPONENTS ARE SUBJECT TO EXHAUST SYSTEM HEAT DAMAGE DUE TO PROLONGED COLD, HIGH SPEED IDLE OPERATION.

Consequence: CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: HYDRAULIC FLUID LEAKAGE COULD OCCUR CREATING THE POTENTIAL FOR A MINOR FIRE FROM FLUID CONTACTING THE HOT EXHAUST.

Remedy: INSTALL PROTECTIVE HEAT SHIELDS BETWEEN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AND AFFECTED CLUTCH SYSTEM COMPONENTS.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
90V124000 · Structure:Body:Bumpers

Reported: 1990-07-06 (July 6, 1990) · Model years: 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990

IN A REAR END COLLISION, THE PICKUP BOX CROSSMEMBER COULD CONTACT THE FUEL PUMP MODULES FUEL LINE, CAUSING A FUEL LEAK WHICH WOULD BE IN NON-COMPLIANCE WITH FMVSS 301.

Consequence: CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: LEAKAGE OF FUEL COULD CAUSE A FIRE IF A SOURCE OF IGNITION IS PRESENT.

Remedy: INSTALL TWO PICKUP BOX REINFORCEMENT BLOCKER BRACKETS TO THE UNDERCARRIAGE TO ELIMINATE CONTACT WITH FUEL LINE.

NHTSA campaign record ↗

I JUST BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE FROM A NEIGHBOR, IT WAS CLEAN AND STRAIGHT AND HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN FOR YEARS. I DRAINED THE GAS AND INSTALLED A NEW PUMP IN THE TANK, THE MOTOR RUNS GREAT. IN PROGRESSING WITH ROUTINE MAINTENANCE BEFORE TRYING TO DRIVE THIS PICK-UP I STARTED TO INSTALL A NEW TRANSMISSION FILTER WHEN IN THE BOTTOM OF THE PAN I DISCOVERED A WEDGE OF CAST METAL THAT HAD A CUP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE THICK UPPER PORTION THAT WAS BROKEN OUT. I WAS DISAPPOINTED AS I KNEW THIS WOULD BE A PROBLEM. I WENT TO THE LOCAL DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME …

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
