15V637000 · Structure:Motorcycle:Kickstand/Center Stand

Reported: 2015-10-09 (October 9, 2015) · Model years: 2015, 2016

Ducati North America (Ducati) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Multistrada 1200 and 1200 S motorcycles manufactured December 1, 2014, to June 11, 2015. In the affected vehicles, the side-stand may break, due to an incorrect length of the side-stand support tube.

Consequence: If the side-stand breaks, the motorcyle would fall over, increasing the risk of injury to the rider and/or the passenger.

Remedy: Ducati will notify owners, and dealers will replace the side-stand support tubes, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on November 5, 2015. Owners may contact Ducati customer service at 1-800-231-6696. The recall number for this recall is RCL-15-003.

ON 12 MARCH 2021 FROM HENDERSONVILLE TO CLARKSVILLE TENNESSEE, DURING A 1.5 HOUR RIDE ON BOTH HIGHWAY AND CITY STREETS, I EXPERIENCED A REAR BRAKE MALFUNCTION. AT THE START OF HE RIDE, APPROXIMATELY 5PM, WHILE ON CITY STREETS I WAS ABLE TO USE THE REAR BRAKE WITHOUT ANY ISSUES. IT HAD ADEQUATE FEEL AND RESPONSIVENESS AT THE LEVER. APPROXIMATELY 45 MINUTES INTO THE RIDE, I NOTICED THE REAR BRAKE LEVER BECAME MUSHY TO THE POINT WHERE I HAD TO ROTATE MY FOOT FARTHER INTO THE LEVER'S ROTATION TO APPLY THE REAR BRAKE. THIS MUSHY FEELING RESULTED…

THE REAR BRAKE ON THIS MOTORCYCLE IS VIRTUALLY USELESS. EVEN AFTER HAVING IT SERVICED AT THE DEALER AND BRAKE FLUID FLUSHED AND REPLACED THE REAR BRAKE IS STILL EXTREMELY WEAK COMPARED TO ALL OTHER MOTORCYCLES I'VE OWNED OR RIDDEN. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THIS IS DUE TO THE MASTER CYLINDER AND BRAKE LINES BEING TOO CLOSE TO THE EXHAUST; I HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD THIS IS DUE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL AND MASTER CYLINDER BEING MOUNTED ON SEPARATE COMPONENTS AND HEAT CYCLES CAUSE THE ADJUSTMENT TO GO IN AND OUT OF SPEC. FOR THE LAST 6 MONTHS MY 2016 MULTISTRADA FUEL GAUGE SHOWS THE FUEL TANK AS EMPTY REGARDLESS OF ACTUAL FUEL LEVEL. OCCASIONALLY IT WILL SHOW A QUANTITY, BUT THE QUANTITY IS NOT CORRECT (SHOWS FULL WITH A HALF TANK OF FUEL, OR SHOWS 2/3 EMPTY IMMEDIATE AFTER FILLING UP). AFTER A FEW MINUTES, IT WILL REVERT BACK TO SHOWING EMPTY. THE BEHAVIOR IS CONSTANT, AND NOT AFFECTED BY FUEL LEVEL, TEMPERATURE, OR OTHER FACTORS. WITHOUT THE GAUGE, THERE IS NO INDICATION WHEN FUEL LEVEL IS LOW. THE LOW-FUEL WARINING LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED CONSTANTLY. …

DEFECTIVE TPS UNITS IN MANY BIKES. THIS CAUSES SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER. ACCORDING TO MY RESEARCH THE PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD IN THIS SPECIFIC BIKE. VERY DANGEROUS ALMOST CRASHED ON HIGHWAY. THIS NEEDS ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY! WAS TRAVELLING APPROXIMATELY 70 MILES PER HOUR AND LOST ALL POWER ON BIKE. STUCK ON SIDE OF ROAD. INTERMITTENT PROBLEM MAKING IT MORE DANGEROUS.

THE REAR BRAKE HAS NEVER FUNCTIONED PROPERLY. THEY HAVE TRIED TO FIX IT AND I HAVE PAID TO BLEED IT SEVERAL TIMES. IT WORKS FOR ONE RIDE AND THEN IT IS BASICALLY NON FUNCTIONAL FROM THERE ON AGAIN. TO OBTAIN ANY ACTION I HAVE TO REMOVE MY FOOT FROM THE PEG AND PUSH THE LEVER DOWN TO EXTREME LEVELS AND EVEN THEN LITTLE STOPPING POWER IS PROVIDED.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

MY 2016 MULTISTRADA EXPERIENCES INCONSISTENT BRAKING WITH THE REAR BRAKE, EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE WITH THE REAR BRAKE AND UNEXPECTED SOFT REAR BRAKE PEDAL WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. I AM UNABLE TO RELY ON THE REAR BRAKE TO FUNCTION AT ANY TIME OR SPEED WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE SINCE I PURCHASED THE BIKE APPROXIMATELY 1 YEAR AGO, AND FOR THE 3,000 MILES I HAVE USED IT.
