Recall history

3 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

01V044009 · Steering:Linkages:Tie Rod Assembly

Reported: 2001-04-17 (April 17, 2001) · Model years: 1999, 2000

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS AND SCHOOL BUS CHASSIS EQUIPPED WITH TIE ROD ASSEMBLIES CONTAINING 24-DL MODEL BALL SOCKETS AND MANUFACTURED BY TRW. CERTAIN OF THE TIE ROD BALL-SOCKET BEARINGS HAVE A BELOW-SPECIFICATION CASE DEPTH AND/OR HARDNESS, WHICH CAN LEAD TO PREMATURE WEAR OF THE SOCKET.

Consequence: IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS, THE DRIVER CAN LOSE PARTIAL CONTROL OF THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE BALL SOCKETS AND/OR DRAG LINKS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 24, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020 OR GMC AT 1-800-462-8782.

01V140001 · Steering:Linkages:Tie Rod Assembly

Reported: 2001-04-10 (April 10, 2001) · Model years: 1999, 2000

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH AXLE ASSEMBLIES WHICH MAY HAVE BEEN MANUFACTURED WITH TRW MODEL 20EDL BALL SOCKETS. THE TIE ROD BALL-SOCKET BEARINGS HAVE A BELOW SPECIFICATION CASE DEPTH AND/OR HARDNESS WHICH CAN LEAD TO PREMATURE WEAR OUT OF THE SOCKET IN SOME APPLICATIONS.

Consequence: IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS, THE DRIVER CAN LOSE STEERING CONTROL, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE BALL SOCKET ASSEMBLIES. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 24, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-1020 OR GMC AT 1-800-462-8782.

01V080000 · Fuel System, Other

Reported: 2001-03-09 (March 9, 2001) · Model years: 2001

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MEDIUM DUTY C SERIES VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH AN IMPCO LIQUEFIED PETROLEUM GAS (LPG) CONVERSION KIT. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES EXHIBIT A CONDITION IN WHICH THE ENGINE COULD BACKFIRE AND FRACTURE THE PLASTIC INLET ELBOW WITHIN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.

Consequence: IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, AND THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE WERE OPEN, PLASTIC FRAGMENTS FROM THE ELBOW COULD CAUSE INJURY TO PEOPLE IN THE IMMEDIATE AREA. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WILL STOP RUNNING DUE TO INADEQUATE FUEL SUPPLY.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A TEMPORARY INLET ELBOW THAT IS REINFORCED WITH A FIBERGLASS WRAP. THE INSTALLATION OF THIS TEMPORARY ELBOW WILL ELIMINATE THE SAFETY CONDITION. FOR THE PERMANENT REPAIR, DEALERS WILL INSTALL ALUMINUM INLET ELBOWS. A PRELIMINARY OWNER NOTIFICATION WAS MAILED TO CONSUMERS DURING MAY 2001. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN MAY 21, 2001. A SEPARATE OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BE MAILED WHEN PARTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE PERMANENT REPAIR.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
