Recall history
6 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.
77V032000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic
Reported: 1977-03-01 (March 1, 1977) · Model years: 1975, 1976, 1977
ON THE INVOLVED VEHICLES, ONE OR BOTH OF THE FRONT BRAKE CALIPER BOLTS MAY BREAK. THIS COULD ALLOW THE BROKEN PORTION OF THE BOLT TO DRIFT INTO THE ADJACENT ROTATING WHEEL SPOKES. SHOULD BOTH CALIPER BOLTS BREAK, THE INNER CALIPER HALF MAY BECOME DETACHED FROM THE MOTORCYCLE.
Remedy: DEALER WILL REPLACE BOLTS WITH IMPROVED TYPE BOLTS, WHERE NECESSARY.
NHTSA campaign record ↗79V114000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Foundation Components:Master Cylinder
Reported: 1979-05-10 (May 10, 1979) · Model years: 1977, 1978
THE INVOLVED CYCLES WERE PRODUCED WITH A REAR BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER PUSH ROD WHICH HAS INSUFFICIENT CONTACT AREA WITH THE REAR BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER PISTON. THIS COULD RESULT IN THE ROD PENETRATING THE PISTON DURING EXTREMELY HIGH PEDAL EFFORT.
NHTSA campaign record ↗79V167000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Pedals And Linkages
Reported: 1979-07-09 (July 9, 1979) · Model years: 1978, 1979
BECAUSE THE REAR BRAKE PEDAL IS MADE OF ALUMINUM CASTINGS IT COULD BREAK AT THE PEDAL ARM OR CLAMPING HOLE.
Remedy: THE DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE REAR BRAKE PEDAL WITHOUT CHARGE.
NHTSA campaign record ↗79V100000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Foundation Components:Master Cylinder
Reported: 1979-04-17 (April 17, 1979) · Model years: 1979
CERTAIN VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN EQUIPPED WITH FRONT BRAKE MASTER CYLINDERS WHICH HAVE FISSURES IN THE CYLINDER BODIES. THIS WOULD ALLOW BRAKE FLUID LEAKAGE THROUGH THE FISSURED SECTION.
Remedy: DEALER WILL REPLACE DEFECTIVE FRONT BRAKE MASTER CYLINDERS WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNERS.
NHTSA campaign record ↗79V115000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Pedals And Linkages
Reported: 1979-05-11 (May 11, 1979) · Model years: 1979
THE REAR BRAKE FREE TRAVEL ADJUSTING BOLT AND NUT INSTALLED DURING VEHICLE ASSEMBLY MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY TIGHTENED. THIS COULD CAUSE THE BRAKE PEDAL TO BECOME JAMMED DURING BRAKE OPERATION.
Remedy: DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, ADJUST AND TIGHTEN THE JAMNUTS.
NHTSA campaign record ↗79V169000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Foundation Components:Master Cylinder
Reported: 1979-07-09 (July 9, 1979) · Model years: 1979
THE REAR BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER PLASTIC PISTON EMPLOYS A NON-SPECIFIED MATERIAL WHICH MAY ALLOW EXCESSIVE WATER ABSORPTION. AS A RESULT, THE PLASTIC PISTON MIGHT STICK IN THE MASTER CYLINDER PISTON BORE AND CAUSE BRAKE DRAG.
Remedy: DEALER WILL REPLACE REAR BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER PISTONS WITHOUT CHARGE TO OWNER.

Problems by model year
Model-wide comparison of the eight most reported components across the model. Cells show counts and shares within each model year. Open a cell for source examples.

Darker cells indicate a larger share of submitted complaints. Components overlap. This measures complaint composition, not failure probability.
Failure mileage by component
Median and middle 50% of usable owner-reported mileages. Ranges require at least five records.

Emerging complaint spikes
Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.
This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.
No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
Equal-age model-year comparison
Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
1978: 0 complaints · 1979: 0 complaints
| Model year | Through age 0 | Through age 1 | Through age 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1978 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 1979 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Date coverage across each selected cohort
| Year | Incident dates used | Filing date fallbacks | Excluded dates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1978 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 1979 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
