Recall history

4 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

84V044000 · Unknown Or Other

Reported: 1984-04-04 (April 4, 1984) · Model years: 1983, 1984

COMPONENT OF TWO-PIECE UPPER BRACE CLAMP WHICH HELPS TO ATTACH THE SIDECAR TO THE MOTORCYCLE FRAME CONTAINS CHEMICAL IMPURITIES IN THE CASTING AND WAS SUBJECTED TO IMPROPER HEAT TREATMENT DURING MANUFACTURING. UPPER BRACE CLAMP MAY FRACTURE.

Remedy: UPPER BRACE CLAMPS WILL BE INSPECTED AND REPLACED WITHOUT CHARGE.

89V115000 · Vehicle Speed Control

Reported: 1989-07-20 (July 20, 1989) · Model years: 1989

CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO WATER CONTAMINATION AND, IF IT BECOMES WET WHILE IN USE, COULD CREATE A SHORT CIRCUIT.

Consequence: MOTORCYCLE SPEED WOULD INCREASE AUTOMATICALLY WITHOUTANY ACTION ON THE PART OF THE DRIVER PRESENTING THE POTENTIAL FOR AN ACCIDENT.

Remedy: REPLACE CRUISE CONTROL MODULE.

93V211000 · Vehicle Speed Control

Reported: 1993-12-13 (December 13, 1993) · Model years: 1993, 1994

THE COMPONENTS WITHIN THE RIGHT-HAND SWITCH ASSEMBLY MAY GENERATE HEAT, WHICH IS CONDUCTED BY THE METAL THROTTLE GUIDE TUBES, SUFFICIENT TO MELT THE INTERLINER BETWEEN THE CABLE HOUSING AND THE THROTTLE CABLE, THUS RESTRICTING THE MOVEMENT OF THE THROTTLE CABLE.

Consequence: RESTRICTION OF THE THROTTLE CABLE MOVEMENT MAY CAUSE THETHROTTLE TO BIND, WHICH MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND AN ACCIDENT.

Remedy: REPAIR THE THROTTLE CABLE.

98V158000 · Electrical System:Ignition:Switch

Reported: 1998-07-14 (July 14, 1998) · Model years: 1994, 1996, 1997, 1998

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: FL TOURING MOTORCYCLES. A LOSS OF ELECTRICAL POWER THROUGH THE IGNITION SWITCH CAN OCCUR DUE TO EXCESSIVE CURRENT AND OTHER FACTORS.

Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE THE ENGINE TO FAIL TO START, OPERATE ERRATICALLY, OR STALL.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH/CIRCUIT BREAKER AND INSTALL A RELAY KIT.

ODI 730602

CRACK IN THE ENGINE CASE CAUSED PRIMARY FLUID TO BE EVACUATED FROM THE PRIMARY CASE RESULTING IN A SECONDARY FAILURE OF THE CLUTCH. THE FAILURE OF THE CLUTCH THEN LED TO AN IMMEDIATE DECREASE IN SPEED AND NO POWER. THE CLUTCH ACTED AS IF IT WAS ALWAYS ENGAGED. I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY TWO HARLEY CERTIFIED MECHANICS THAT THIS HAS BEEN A KNOWN PROBLEM FOR THAT PARTICULAR MODEL YEAR (AS WELL AS EARLIER YEARS) AND WARRANTY WORK HAS BEEN DONE ON THESE MOTORCYCLES UP TO AS LATE AS LAST YEAR. I ALSO SPOKE WITH HD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY VERIFIED THA…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
