Reported: 2005-09-22 (September 22, 2005) · Model years: 2004
ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, THE THROTTLE CABLES COME INTO CONTACT WITH THE TUNNEL PORTION OF THE FUEL TANK.
Consequence: IN THIS CONDITION, THE CABLES COULD EVENTUALLY WEAR THROUGH THE TANK, CAUSING A FUEL LEAK. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE CABLE AND TANK, REPOSITION THE CABLE AND, IF NECESSARY, REPAIR OR REPLACE THE TANK AND/OR CABLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 31, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HARLEY-DAVIDSON AT 1-414-343-4056.

DT: THERE IS BRACKET THAT HOLDS THE ADJUSTER IN PLACE AND THE REAR WHEEL IN ALIGNMENT AND STEADY. WHEN THE BRACKET LOOSENED IT LET THE WHEEL LOOSE. THE BIKE WILL SHAKE, RATTLE AND SHIMMY. HAVE A MANUEL THAT SAYS THE BOLTS SHOULD BE 25 TO 30 LBS FOR THE TORQUE. THE ACTUAL TEXT IN THE MANUEL SHOWED TO DO THE PROCEDURE AND THERE WAS INCORRECT INFORMATION. THIS HAPPENED AROUND MAY 30, 2005. CONTACTED THE DEALER, THEY TORQUED IT DOWN, BUT 1500 MILES LATER IT DID THE SAME THING.

Emerging complaint spikes
Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.
This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.
No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
Equal-age model-year comparison

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
