5 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.
86V041000 · Power Train:Automatic Transmission
Reported: 1986-03-11 (March 11, 1986) · Model years: 1986
TRANSMISSION MAGNETIC DRAIN PLUGS MAY HAVE BEEN BROKEN DURING ASSEMBLY. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: THE BROKEN MAGNET MAY BECOME LODGED BETWEEN THE TRANSMISSION GEARS CAUSING THE TRANSMISSION TO LOCKUP. IF THE MOTORCYCLE IS OPERATING, THE REAR WHEEL WILL LOCK-UP WHICH MAY LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT.
Remedy: REPLACE THE DRAIN PLUG WITH A SHORTER, NON INTERFERING MAGNETIC DRAIN PLUG.
NHTSA campaign record ↗89V184000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Foundation Components:Hoses, Lines/Piping, And Fittings
Reported: 1989-11-02 (November 2, 1989) · Model years: 1989, 1990
A FATIGUE CRACK IN THE REAR BRAKE LINE ASSEMBLY COULD DEVELOP.
Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID AND LOSS OF REARBRAKE OPERATION WHICH WOULD REDUCE STOPPING ABILITY AND INCREASE POTENTIAL FORAN ACCIDENT.
Remedy: INSTALL REPLACEMENT REAR BRAKE LINE COMPONENTS.
THE STARTER RELAY MAY SHORT CIRCUIT WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED.
Consequence: THE SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE STARTER RELAY MAY DEVELOP ENOUGHHEAT TO CAUSE A FIRE IN THE RELAY, OTHER PARTS OF THE MOTORCYCLE, AND OTHERITEMS IN THE SURROUNDING AREA.
Reported: 1999-07-23 (July 23, 1999) · Model years: 1999
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTORCYCLES. THESE MOTORCYCLES WERE BUILT WITH A FUEL TANK VENT FITTING THAT COULD BE PLUGGED ALLOWING THE CARBURETOR TO OVERFLOW FUEL.
Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FUEL TANK VENT FITTING AND, IF PLUGGED, WILL CORRECT THIS CONDITION.
Reported: 2007-04-26 (April 26, 2007) · Model years: 2007
CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES WERE BUILT WITH A CONDITION THAT PERMITS THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE TO CONTACT A WELD BEAD ON THE OIL TANK. THIS MAY CAUSE THE WELD BEAD TO ABRADE THROUGH THE INSULATION ON THE CABLE AND CAUSE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT FROM THE BATTERY THROUGH THE OIL TANK AND OIL LINES.
Consequence: THIS COULD LEAD TO AN OIL LEAK AND/OR POSSIBLE FIRE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH TO THE RIDER.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A BATTERY CADDY THAT WILL PROTECT THE CABLE AND ENSURE PROPER CABLE ROUTING. THIS RECALL BEGAN ON MAY 4, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HARLEY-DAVIDSON AT 1-414-342-4080.

At about 3 PM on June 26, 2021 I was going south on Route 131 a mile past the junction with Route 73. There are four long sweeping turns after the junction. I’ve traveled that road on motorcycles hundreds of times. It was clear dry and sunny. The road repaved three months ago is very smooth. Luckily there was no close by following or approaching traffic. With the strong torque of the Softail Custom there is no need to adjust throttle at all in going through these wide turns. I was going slightly below the speed limit of 45 mph. Then when I was …
THE REAR BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH FAILED IN A MANNER SIMILAR TO THE REPORT 11V506000. BRAKE LIGHT WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE WHEN BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED. REPLACEMENT OF THE SWITCH SOLVED THE PROBLEM. THIS MALFUNCTION IS EERILY SIMILAR TO THE NAMED REPORT. WHEN I SPOKE TO THE DEALER IT WAS INDICATED THAT THIS PROBLEM IS SEEN REGULARLY. THE PROBLEM IS ALSO WIDELY REPORTED ON WEB HARLEY DAVIDSON FORUMS. IT'S OBVIOUS THAT THIS IS A SYSTEMIC SAFETY PROBLEM THAT MANDATES EXPANDING THE VEHICLES AFFECTED. *TR

Emerging complaint spikes
Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.
This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.
No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
Equal-age model-year comparison

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
