Owner report 11436473 · 2021-10-12 (October 12, 2021)

On Wednesday, October 6th, I was driving full speed (65mph) on a major highway. Multiple lights on the dashboard came on. The LCD display screen for music, apps, etc. went black. More lights came on and others went off on the dash display. I let off the accelerator and steered the car. The fuel efficiency was wilding jumping back and forth. Soon enough, all the lights went back off, but the mileage gauge (fuel efficiency) continued to jump wildly. The brakes seemed to respond differently- almost as if there was a delay between me pressing the b…

When I arrived in the parking lot and selected the R (reverse), the vehicle stayed in the D (Drive) although that it was moving backwards and was able to park it. The shift selector was stuck in DRIVE (Drive) leaving the vehicle on but not operational. After several attempts to allow the vehicle to cool and the battery to reset, (30 minutes_ later), the car started and took the vehicle to be serviced. The vehicle technician said they had a difficult time diagnosing the vehicle because it was giving different codes. They said that while testin…

The forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control failed as the first 2 activated when there were no oncoming collisions in front of me and the nearest cars around me were 1/4 of a mile away. The cruise control failed as it turned back on after the vehicle veered off the highway and into the rest stop. My safety and the safety of a lot of other people in the rest stop were put at risk because the system malfunction and tripped when no other cars were present that would have led to a collision. Incident sounds similar to those experienced with the dual clutch transmissions. November 2022, all of the vehicle warning lights were on and remained on. The vehicle would not move and the transmission selector/shifter was locked in place. Working with the local service/dealership, the vehicle was repaired after 3 weeks with a new transmission shift actuator (or possibly other part). Similarity in the experience and possibility of risk with little information about trends or others in similar situations or resolution. We've had another (Same…

The vehicle experiences sudden, complete electrical power loss while driving at speed on highways and city streets or on the parking. All digital displays turn off, the engine shuts down, and power-assisted steering and braking are instantly lost without prior warning, presenting an extreme collision risk. The issue first occurred in August 2025 at approximately 48,000 miles and was taken to an authorized Hyundai dealer in Michigan for warranty repair. The tachometer still shows power but the brakes depress and there is no power to the vehicle and it hesitates feeling as if the ABS are kicking in. In order for it to resolve itself you have to let it run its course. The service departments at the dealer have felt it but can’t pinpoint an answer.

The gear shifter design on this Hyundai model is dangerously counterintuitive compared to industry norms. It nearly caused me to drive off a cliff. I encountered a serious safety issue with the gear selector design. In most vehicles , including Mercedes, GM, and even pickup trucks , pushing the gear selector down engages forward drive, and up engages reverse or park. Hyundai has reversed this logic. In a rushed moment, I instinctively pushed the shifter down expecting to go forward (as in most cars), but the Hyundai was in reverse. I stepped …

On three separate occasions, while going very fast (60-78 mph), the automatic emergency braking system turns on. The warning lights flash and there is some type of warning noise. I don't even know if it starts to break because it scares me so much, I just press the gas. It turns off within a couple of seconds, but that is not the point. The vehicle’s 12-volt electrical system repeatedly loses power within about 1 hour of sitting. The car becomes completely unresponsive (cannot unlock or start) and requires use of the built-in 12V battery reset button to restore power. This occurs frequently and makes the vehicle unreliable and potentially unsafe, as the car may become inoperable without warning. This appears to be an electrical system defect or parasitic power drain. The issue has been ongoing.

A lot of the reports indicate that owners have tried getting theirs cars repaired for the same issue I have a various dealerships all across the US, but either haven't had any luck or have had a temporary fix for the issue, which proceeded to occur again every couple of months. I personally have had my car inspected by my personal dealership and they have …

If I didn't react so fast, I am unsure of what could actually happen.

My Lincoln Nautilus (~9,180 miles) logged 6 "Powertrain Malfunction / Reduced Power" alerts in the [XXX] telematics system between XXX (XXX at 7:59 PM and 8:16 PM; XXX at 1:07 PM and 1:39 PM; XXX at 11:16 PM; and XXX at 10:56 AM). Out of the 6 logged events, I experienced severe loss of motive power during two of them. On XXX, while driving 70 mph on I-95, the vehicle completely lost all propulsion. Coasting without power, I was unable to pull fully onto the shoulder, leaving the car partially stuck in active traffic and narrowly escaping a hi…

My 2021 Sonata Hybrid Limited has been in the shop for over 3 months. At least 4 times while driving on city streets, I'd receive an error stating problem with hybrid system please turn off vehicle. Car would go into limp mode giving me just enough power to pull off to the side of the road (if possible), then completely shutdown. Fix action is to hit jumpstart button to get the power back to the vehicle in order to power it on again. After those issues battery constantly died and I had to use the physical key to open the door and hit the jumpst…

While driving, engine alerted that it was overheating. Pulled over and coolant was very low, so I refilled it and then while driving to my family's garage to use the lift, saw white exhaust smoke. Took it to an independent mechanic, and in the ~10 mile trip there, over a quart of coolant had been burned off. He was able to reproduce the issue. No issues with the engine operation, it runs well and efficient, no check engine light. Mechanic found that a coolant line runs to the middle of the exhaust system and that this seems to be the issue. Oth…

Forward Collision Avoidance: Automatic Emergency Braking

The vehicle has been turning completely off after use for over a year now. At first it would happen every now and then at the beginning and all you'd have to do was restart the car manually. Now every time the car is turned off it needs to be restarted manually now. The car will also shut itself off while you are driving. It will tell you something is wrong and then won't let you get over 15-20 MPH. If you are on a neighborhood, it's less dangerous for this to happen where you can pull over and turn off the car and restart it. But I have seen…

The Battery dies randomly and requires the physical key to unlock the door. It is a hybrid, so it has a 12 volt battery button that jumpstarts the car. While driving the vehicle, the battery meter on the dashboard will show a near-full battery and then a near-empty battery within a few minutes. This vehicle was bought brand new from a Hyundai dealership and for the first 2 years, there wasn't an issue. The past few months, the battery issue started.

Very loud car alarms sounded, e.g., it sounded like a something like a red alert in an old Star Trek episode. warning light indicated engine overheated, extreme exhaust/smoke bellowed out from rear of car while decelerating on highway exit ramp. My wife and I were inside the car during this event. This event happened on 5 pm EST December 9 at Hamilton Avenue exit on Ohio 126 Cross County Highway (Ronald Reagan Highway) in the Cincinnati metropolitan area. Had to park car within one mile. I had the car towed to the nearest dealer after it ha…

The vehicle l…

The BMS module within my cars hybrid system failed causing a parasitic drain on the hybrid battery. The dealership where the work was performed would have to be contacted for pictures. The hybrid battery system swole to a dangerously inflated level and did not produce any codes for an OBD reader to pickup. This has caused the dealership to turn my car away multiple times before finally performing the in depth inspecting required to verify battery swelling. This is a known problem throughout the internet I searched "2021 hyundai sonata hybri…
