21V681000 · Engine And Engine Cooling:Engine:Engine Control Module (Ecu/Ecm):Software | Exterior Lighting:Brake Lights

Reported: 2021-09-02 (September 2, 2021) · Model years: 2020

Indian Motorcycle Company (Indian) is recalling certain 2020 Scout Bobber Sixty motorcycles. An engine control unit (ECU) update may have caused the brake lights to become inoperable.

Consequence: Inoperable brake lights can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Owners will be asked to inspect their brake lights, and advised to not ride their motorcycle if the brake lights are inoperable. If the brake lights are not functioning, dealers will re-flash the ECU, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 27, 2021. Owners may contact Indian customer service at 1-877-204-3697. Indian's number for this recall is I-21-03.

The ABS system light has came on and stayed on, when I took in it to Indian they said it was a very common problem. They then cleaned the sensors but that only worked for a few miles down the road and then came back on. They also said that the ABS MODULE could be defective. With Indian motorcycles if the ABS light stays on then the ABS might not work which in turn will cause the wheels to lock up. The issue first appeared about a year ago

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
