Recall history
10 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.
83V001000 · Steering:Gear Box (Other Than Rack And Pinion)
Reported: 1983-01-10 (January 10, 1983) · Model years: 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983
UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES, THE OUTPUT SHAFT OF THE STEERING GEAR MAY DEVELOP CRACKS AT A LOCATION BETWEEN THE GEAR AND THE PITMAN ARM MOUNTING. THE SUSPECT COMPONENT IS FOUND ON STEERING GEARS WITH THE CODE 05057. CONTINUED OPERATION MAY RESULT IN FRACTURE AND DISCONNECTION OF THE STEERING LINKAGE.
Remedy: THE DEALER WILL REMOVE ORIGINAL OUTPUT SHAFT FROM STEERING GEAR AND REPLACE IT WITH A NEW CASE-HARDENED SHAFT FREE OF CHARGE.
NHTSA campaign record ↗85V037000 · Steering:Linkages:Knuckle:Spindle:Arm
Reported: 1985-04-02 (April 2, 1985) · Model years: 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985
THE STEERING ARM MAY CRACK AFTER REPEATED FULL-LOCK TURNS. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: IF CRACKS PROGRESS TO COMPLETE FRACTURE OF THE ARM, STEERING CONTROL WOULD BE LOST AND A VEHICLE ACCIDENT COULD OCCUR.
Remedy: REPLACE STEERING ARM WITH REDESIGNED STRENGTHENED ARM.
NHTSA campaign record ↗86V026000 · Steering:Linkages:Arm:Idler And Attachment
Reported: 1986-01-14 (January 14, 1986) · Model years: 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985
STEERING ARM MAY CRACK AFTER REPEATED FULL LOCK TURNS DUE TO THE LACK OF END-OF-TRAVEL RELIEF FEATURES. CONSEQUENCE OF DEFECT: LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL WOULD BE EXPERIENCED IF CRACKS EXPAND TO COMPLETE FRACTURE OF THE ARM, AND A CRASH COULD OCCUR WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING.
Remedy: REPLACE STEERING ARM WITH A REDESIGNED STRENGTHENED ARM.
NHTSA campaign record ↗80V030000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Foundation Components:Hoses, Lines/Piping, And Fittings
Reported: 1980-03-19 (March 19, 1980) · Model years: 1979, 1980
THE BRAKE FLUID LINES WHICH RUN TO AND FROM THE FRAME MOUNTED POWER ASSIST UNIT MAY BE INCORRECTLY ROUTED RESULTING IN THE LINES RUBBING OR CHAFING ON A FENDER SPLASH SHIELD BRACKET.
Remedy: ALL VEHICLES WILL BE INSPECTED AND, IF NECESSARY, THE BRAKE LINES WILL BE REPOSITIONED TO PROVIDE CLEARANCE TO THE SPLASH SHIELD BRACKET AT NO CHARGE TO OWNERS.
NHTSA campaign record ↗81V041000 · Steering:Linkages:Tie Rod Assembly
Reported: 1981-03-25 (March 25, 1981) · Model years: 1980, 1981
THE NUT THAT FASTENS THE TAPERED TIE ROD ENDS TO THE STEERING ARMS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN SUFFICIENTLY TIGHTENED ON CERTAIN VEHICLES. THE NUT COULD LOOSEN AND EVENTUALLY COME OFF, CAUSING THE TIE ROD TO DISENGAGE FROM THE STEERING ARM. THE NUT MAY COME OFF DESPITE THE INSTALLATION OF LOCKING COTTER PINS.
Remedy: THE NUT WILL BE SECURELY FASTENED AT NO CHARGE.
NHTSA campaign record ↗81V129000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Foundation Components:Hoses, Lines/Piping, And Fittings
Reported: 1981-10-22 (October 22, 1981) · Model years: 1980
AN EXTRA ADAPTER FITTING USED ALONG WITH AN INCORRECT THROUGH-FRAME FITTING MAY HAVE BEEN INSTALLED IN THE FLUID LINE. THE ADDITIONAL LENGTH OF THE EXTRA FITTING COULD MOVE THE FLUID LINE INTO A POSITION OF INTERFERENCE WITH THE CLUTCH ROD, CAUSING WEAR ON THE FLUID LINE.
Remedy: THE UNNECESSARY ADAPTER FITTING WILL BE REMOVED FROM THE BRAKE SYSTEM AND THE CORRECT THROUGH-FRAME FITTING WILL BE INSTALLED. THE BRAKE LINE WILL BE INSPECTED FOR EVIDENCE OF WEAR AND REPLACED, IF NECESSARY, AT NO CHARGE TO OWNER.
NHTSA campaign record ↗82V040000 · Power Train:Clutch Assembly:Pedal/Hand Lever(Motorcycle)

WITHIN THE STEERING SYSTEM, HIGH OPERATING TEMPERATURES MAY CAUSE EVENTUAL DETERIORATION OF THE HOSE WHICH RETURNS POWER STEERING FLUID TO THE PUMP. THE HOSE MAY RUPTURE AND POWER STEERING ASSIST WILL BE LOST.
Remedy: DEALER WILL REPLACE THE POWER STEERING HOSE AND INSTALL A HEAT SHIELD BETWEEN THE ENGINE AND HOSE AT NO CHARGE.

Remedy: THE DEALER WILL INSPECT AND RETIGHTEN FASTENERS TO SPECIFIED LEVEL AND REPLACE DAMAGED COMPONENTS, IF NECESSARY.

Emerging complaint spikes
Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.
This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.
No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
Equal-age model-year comparison
Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
1984: 0 complaints · 1985: 0 complaints
| Model year | Through age 0 | Through age 1 | Through age 2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1984 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 1985 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Date coverage across each selected cohort
| Year | Incident dates used | Filing date fallbacks | Excluded dates |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1984 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| 1985 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
