Motorcycle with ML serial numbers have been overtorqued steering bearing nuts from factory, multiple problems showing up. Steering on mine locked up in a turn, but was able to force it to straighten out. Kawasaki is aware they overtorqued (via multiple sources) but has not released a tech bulletin, or service recall on a dangerous situation. Slow speeds steering will have a tight bind at the 12" position, and will have a hard time turning left or right out of the tight spot. Occasionally, turning back into the 12 position will cause a bind/catc…
The vehicle has a dangerous steering issue. While in a slower speed turn, the vehicle's steering becomes restricted, and then unexpectedly free's up, which almost causes a crash. Some are referring to this a the "steering notch issue". There are multiple references to this issue in online forums. The Kawasaki dealer says that they have not been informed of any steering issues. This bike will kill me unless this issue is resolved. I will be taking it back to the dealer for service.
Unknown Multiple people reported to have issue with stiff steering during low speed including my motorcycle because of defective steering head bearings. Critical safety issues. No recall have been done .
Driving at low speeds the steering has a pull to it. Kawasaki has acknowledged the stem is overtorqued from factory but has yet to issue a recall and I still haven't heard back about them fixing it. This is a serious problem as I've almost been brought into a curb on several occasion even spraining my ankle trying to save it one time. This needs to be a recalled from forums the it is clear this is a consitant problem with the 2023 klr 650 s
The steering nut for the handlebars of the motorcycle seem to have been overtightened. This causes a noticeable catch in the steering at low speeds, especially when making a turn from a stop. This causes unsafe handling characteristics in the motorcycle as it makes the operator oversteer in slow speed situations. Kawasaki has claimed that they do not know about this problem, although there have been many reports from consumers and service centers. While I personally have not taken the vehicle to a service center yet (I am scheduled to do …

TURN SIGNAL MOUNT DRY ROTS AND FALLS OFF POSSIBLE CAUSE OF INJURY FROM SIGNAL ITSELF. OTHER PROBLEM IS IT COULD FALL OFF WITHOUT RIDER KNOWING IT AND COULD BE INVOLVED IN CRASH FROM LACK OF SIGNAL GIVEN TO OTHER VEHICLES ON THE ROAD. *TR
2008 KAWASAKI KLR 650 TURN SIGNAL SUPPORT FAILURE. THE RUBBER BOOT THAT HOLDS THE TURN SIGNAL ONTO THE MOUNTING LOCATION HAS SHEARED OFF COMPLETELY ON ONE, AND PARTIALLY ON ANOTHER. *TR
ON MY 1998 KAWASAKI KLR650 MOTORCYCLE, VIN [XXX], THE IDLER SHAFT LEVER (KAWASAKI PART NO: 13168-1436) BROKE, LEAVING NO TENSION ON THE BALANCER CHAIN INSIDE THE ENGINE. THIS IS AN ALL-TOO-COMMON PROBLEM ON THESE BIKES. FAILURE OF THE LEVER CAN RESULT IN FAILURE OF THE CHAIN. IF THE CHAIN FAILS AT HIGHWAY SPEED, THE ENGINE WILL SEIZE, LOCKING THE BACK WHEEL WHICH WILL CERTAIN RESULT IN A NASTY ACCIDENT. KAWASAKI NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS. NON-TECHNICAL OWNERS MAY NOT BE AWARE THAT THEIR ENGINE IS A TICKING TIME BOMB. *NLM INFORMATION RED…
THIS INVOLVES ENGINE PART #13168-1436 (LEVER, IDLER SHAFT) (ALSO KNOWN AS THE "DOOHICKEY") , WHICH IS PART OF THE ENGINE'S BALANCER CHAIN TENSIONER SYSTEM. WHILE MAKING AN UNRELATED ADJUSTMENT TO THE ENGINE I REMOVED THE LEFT SIDE ENGINE COVER AND NOTICED THAT A PORTION OF THE DOOHICKEY HAD BROKEN OFF AND WAS LOOSE IN THE ENGINE CASE. THE DAMAGE TO THE DOOHICKEY WAS SIMILAR TO WHAT I HAVE SEEN IN OTHER KLR650 ENGINES AND APPEARED TO BE DUE TO THE STARTER GEAR (ENGINE PART #16085-1205 (GEAR, ONEWAY CLUTCH)) IMPACTING THE DOOHICKEY. FORTUNATEL…

KAWASAKI KLR650 BALANCER TENSIONER AND CAM SPRING ON MOTORCYCLE LESS THAN ONE YEAR OLD WITH LOW MILEAGE. AFTER READING OF SIMILAR FAILURES IN OTHER MOTORCYCLES SOME OF WHICH REPORTEDLY RESULTED IN INJURY, I DECIDED TO OPEN THE ENGINE HOUSING TO INVESTIGATE. BOTH COMPONENTS HAD SHATTERED RESULTING IN METALIC FRAGMENTATION RESIDUE DRAWN INTO THE OIL PUMP MECHANISM (BUT STOPPED BY OIL PUMP METALIC SCREENING).
I JUST CHECKED MY IDLER SHAFT LEVER (DOOHICKEY) ON MY 2003 KLR 650. THE DOOHICKEY WAS INTACT BUT, THE SPRING WAS BROKE. I CAN'T FIND THE END OF THE SPRING THAT BROKE OFF AND THE CHAIN WORE PART WAY THROUGH THE SPRING LEAVING METAL SHAVINGS THROUGHOUT THE ENGINE NOT GOOD!!! JUST ORDERED NEW DOOHICKEY AND SPRING FROM ARROWHEAD MOTORSPORTS. *JB
I JUST WISHED TO REPORT SOMETHING I FOUND OUT BY CHANCE, UPON INSPECTING THE INSIDE OF MY ENGINE, AND WHICH COULD HAVE POTENTIALLY CAUSE MY ENGINE TO STOP FUNCTIONING/SEIZE AT SPEED, WHICH IN TURN WOULD HAVE LED ME TO CRASH. THE IDLER SHAFT LEVER & SPRING IN MY ENGINE WAS DEFECTIVE. UPON FINDING THE BROKEN PART I WENT "FISHING" FOR THE MISSING PIECES ON THE BOTTOM OF MY ENGINE USING A MAGNET, AND FOUND ANOTHER BROKEN SPRING! MY TAKE IS THAT THE DEALERSHIP HAD REPLACED THE BROKEN SPRING ONCE ALREADY.. WHICH IS WHY I BELIEVE THERE IS DEFECT I…
THE TORSION SPRING ON MY KLR 650 FAILED. THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM AND HAPPENS TO ALOT OF KLR 650 OWNERS. LUCKY FOR ME IT DIDN'T CAUSE THE ENGINE TO SEIZE WHILE I WAS RIDING. *TR
CAM CHAIN ADJUSTER OTHERWISE KNOW AS A DOOHICKEY. IF IT FAILS IT MAY CAUSE THE ENGINE TO SEIZE UP WITHOUT WARNING, I CHANGE MINE AFTER IT BROKE BUT DID NOT CAUSE MASSIVE INTERNAL DAMAGE I WAS UNAWARE THAT MINE HAD FAILED I DID THE CHANGE AS PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN KNOWN TO THE KLR COMMUNITY FOR MANY YEARS BUT KAWASAKI REFUSES TO RECOGNIZE IT, DO A GOOGLE SEARCH ON DOOHICKEY FOR MORE INFO
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 KAWASAKI KLR650. HE WAS DRIVING 55MPH ON HIS MOTORCYCLE AND IT SHUT OFF WITHOUT WARNING. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE WIRES WERE RUBBING UNDERNEATH THE GAS TANK. WHEN THE WIRES RUBBED TOGETHER THEY BLEW A FUSE AND CAUSED THE ENGINE TO SHUT OFF. THE MECHANIC HAS BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL AT REPAIRING THE MOTORCYCLE FOR TWO WEEKS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 1,600.
WHILE TRAVELING ON MAIN HIGHWAY AT 2AM ENROUTE TO WORK I LOST ENGINE AND LIGHTS. NO WARNING. UNABLE TO SEE ANYTHING LET ALONE OTHER MOTORISTS BEING ABLE TO SEE ME. REPLACED MAIN FUSE & BATTERY...NOT THE PROBLEM. TAKING BIKE TO DEALER TODAY. OUT OF WARRANTY BY APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH. ONLY 1500 MILES ON BIKE. DEALER CLAIMS ELECTRICAL SHORTAGE SOMEWHERE??? COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. *TR

1. NO EVENTS PRECIPITATED THE EQUIPMENT FAILURE. IT WAS PURELY NORMAL USE. 2. THE TURN SIGNAL MOUNTING SYSTEM CRACKED AND COMPLETELY SEPARATED FROM THE MOUNTING AREA. THIS HAPPENED ON BOTH RIGHT & LEFT REAR TURN SIGNALS. 3. THE LEFT REAR TURN SIGNAL WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY FROM THE DEALER WITH THE SAME HARDWARE THAT WAS ORIGINAL TO THE MOTORCYCLE. THE RIGHT REAR IS STILL BROKEN BUT KEPT IN PLACE WITH DUCT TAPE UNTIL UPGRADED REPLACEMENT HARDWARE IS AVAILABLE FROM KAWASAKI. *TR
I HEARD ABOUT A FLAW OF THE ENGINE BALANCER SYSTEM OF THE KAWASAKI KLR650, I ASSUMED THAT MY ENGINE WAS OKAY, AS IT SEEMED TO BE RUNNING FINE, BUT THEN GAVE IN TO MY CURIOSITY, OPENED THE ENGINE CASES AND INSPECTED THE BALANCER MECHANISMS. SURE ENOUGH, JUST AS MANY OTHER KLR OWNERS HAD REPORTED, THE IDLER SHAFT WAS BROKEN. I HAD AN AFTER MARKET IDLER SHAFT THAT IS FORGED FROM ONE PIECE OF HIGH GRADE STEEL AND INSTALLED IT. THE ENGINE RUNS QUIETER NOW AND PRESUMABLY IS LESS PRONE TO FAILURE OF THIS TYPE. THE MANUFACTURER, KAWASAKI HEAVY INDU…
WITH LESS THAN 3,000 MILES ON MY 1999 KAWASAKI KLR 650, DURING A ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, A FAILED LEVER, IDLER SHAFT AND SPRING WAS DISCOVERED AND REPLACED WITH AN AFTER-MARKET PRODUCT. DURING THIS SAME MAINTENANCE ACTIVITY, TWO OTHER KLR 650'S WERE FOUND TO HAVE SUFFERED THE SAME FAILURE.
