14V562000 · Engine And Engine Cooling:Engine:Gasoline:Belts And Associated Pulleys

Reported: 2014-09-12 (September 12, 2014) · Model years: 2010

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Lancer, Lancer Evolution, and Outlander; 2009-2011 Lancer Sportback, Lancer Rilliart, and Lancer Sportback Ralliart; and 2011 Outlander Sport vehicles. The affected vehicles, manufactured with 4B1 engines, have an engine pulley and belt arrangement for turning the alternator, the cooling fan and the power steering pump (if equipped). These pulleys may experience unusual wear and allow for belt detachment.

Consequence: If the drive belt detaches, the battery may discharge, resulting in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the drive belt with a rubber belt. Drive pulleys that are excessively worn will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on October 15, 2014. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-009.

MY VEHICLE HAS 68000 MILES ON IT. THE AYC PUMP HAS FAILED. THIS IS A $2200 PART PLUS LABOR. THE TWIN CLUTCH SST TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED. THIS IS A $13,000 TRANSMISSION PLUS LABOR. THIS IS RIDICULOUS THAT THESE TWO HIGHLY EXPENSIVE PARTS HAVE FAILED SO EARLY IN THIS VEHICLES LIFE. ALSO, IT IS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY FROM THE MANUFACTURER. 8,000 MILES OUT OF POWERTRAIN WARRANTY TO BE EXACT. HOW STRANGE...I WISH MITSUBISHI WOULD MAKE GOOD ON THESE VEHICLES. IT IS DISHONEST AND WRONG. ALSO THE MANUFACTURER RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE WAS 100% PERFORMED ON…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
