MAY 30, 2017 MY 2014 RAM 5500 DIESEL DUMP TRUCK HAD A FIRE UNDER THE HOOD. THERE WAS EXTENSIVE DAMAGE/MELTING FROM THE FIRE. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW IN APRIL OF 2015 AND IT WAS 'JUST OUT OF WARRANTY" AT JUST OVER 37,000 MILES ON IT. THE SOURCE OF THE DAMAGE WAS DETERMINED TO BE THE DENSO INTERNATIONAL ALTERNATOR. FCA SENT A FIELD INSPECTOR TO THE SERVICE CENTER WHERE THE TRUCK WAS TOWED, AND MY VEHICLE INSURANCE COMPANY ALSO SENT AN INSPECTOR THERE. TRUCK STARTS SWAYING FROM SIDE TO SIDE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (62-72MPH) STEERING IS NON-RESPONSIVE WHEN TRYING TO CORRECT THE SWAY AND THEN STEERING WILL CATCH IMMEDIATELY AND THE SWAYING GETS WORSE. HAVE TO SLOW TO 40 MPH TO REGAIN CNTROL OF THE VEHICLE. VERY DANGEROUS WHEN OTHERS AROUND YOU ARE DRIVING 65-76 MPH. HAPPENS WHEN VEHICLE IS IN MOTION ON THE HIGHWAY BETWEEN 60-75 MPH. THIS VEHICLE HAD 2 MILES ON IT WHEN PURCHASED. ALL TIRES HAD THE RECOMMENDED AIR PRESSURE IN THEM. PROBLEM IS INTERMITTANT. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES.

WHEN I PULLED OUT FROM A STOP INTO THE INTERSECTION I REALIZED THE CARS WERE CLOSER THAT I FIRST THOUGHT, AND WHEN I INSTINCTIVELY PUSHED THE ACCELERATOR TO THE FLOOR TO GET OUT OF THE WAY, NOTHING HAPPENED FOR WHAT SEEMS LIKE ETERNITY BUT MAYBE JUST A PORTION OF A SECOND BEFORE THE ENGINE RESPONDS. THIS DELAY COULD BE A LIFE THREATENING SITUATION, SINCE THE VEHICLE DOES NOT RESPOND AS YOU WOULD EXPECT IT TO, AND COULD THEREFORE ALLOW YOU TO BE IN THE PATH OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC WITHOUT THE ABILITY TO GET THE VEHICLE TO MOVE AS YOU WOULD EXPEC…

While driving on the freeway at 75 mph transfer case went into neutral. No power to wheels. I managed to coast off the freeway and then towed to dealership. Dodge 5500 trucks are used for heavy hauling such as fire trucks, ambulances and in the west ranchers. If a rancher is going down a steep grade with a heavy load (cattle/horses) they would not be able to STOP due to weight. Transfer case has defective parts internally. Dealer said that there is a defect in the transfer cases and is common on Dodge Ram 4500/5500.

THE HIGH PRESSURE BOOSTER HOSE INTERIOR LINER CAME APART AND JAMMED INTO THE BRAKE BOOSTER PRESSURE PORT. THIS CAUSED LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND LOSS OF POWER BRAKES. THIS IS AN AMBULANCE, WE HAVE MULTIPLE OF THIS SAME YEAR AND MODEL. IT WAS IN MOTION ON A CITY STREET AND RESULTED IN A NEAR MISS. THROUGH AN INTERNET SEARCH AND CALLING THE DODGE DEALERSHIP AND SPEAKING TO THE MECHANIC, THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE ACROSS MULTIPLE MODEL YEARS.
