I have had siginificant issues with my new 2026 rivian R1S specifically based around two key areas: 1. inaccurate battery range reporting/capacity below 20% charge 2. inaccurate mapbox navigation. Those two issues combine to create a dangerous situation in extreme conditions for a vehicle specifically designed and marketed for off-road adventure (snow, rain, below freezing temperatures) and for large capacity (7 passengers). These two issues have left me and my family stranded three different times in remote locations in spite of our best …

Within 48 hours of picking up my new 2026 Rivian R1S Dual Standard, I experienced a power steering fault while on a public roadway to where the vehicle entered a crawl mode and the power steering stopped working. The car was not steerable. I spent an hour on the phone with Rivian emergency roadside support and they had me perform a reset of the vehicle which restored the steering. When I am driving, my passenger sometimes does not trigger the airbag to activate. Depending on how they are sitting, many times the passenger airbag is set to "off" because it can not detect a passenger. The Rivian service center has investigated and mentioned there is no problem and that the passenger needs to sit more upright, but this still seems like a safety issue if we are driving and fail to notice that the passenger airbag is not activated

When the passenger seat is occupied, we intermittently get a message that the airbag is off (and the heating/ac controls for the passenger side go away). This occurred when the seat was occupied by two of my sons (one 6'1", 145 lbs and the other 5'9" and 155 lbs). We took the car in to get checked and while Rivian noticed the same issue after testing, they said diagnostics found nothing wrong. They checked to see if this was related to the Feb 2023 recall and said it is not. Additionally, we have a loaner R1S and it has the exact same issue…

My vehicle has been a service seven times, each time I have complained about my wife not being recognized by the passenger seat. She weighs 100 pounds, and I’m told that the weight limit is 65. On the latest visit they replaced the passenger seat and told me if it still does it, then it is a design flaw, and I’ll have to deal with it. Don’t find this acceptable as it affects my wife’s safety, and would like the manufacturer to rectify the issues of the airbag will function correctly.

The horn is so quiet that when I was driving on the highway at 65 mph, someone changed lanes without looking. I tried to use the horn, but it was so soft that neither the other driver nor I could hear it, which nearly caused a major accident. I’ve spoken to other owners who have also noticed this issue. This could also be dangerous for pedestrians in case of a wrong crossing, as the horn may not be loud enough to alert them.

The heat pump compressor had a loud noise for days, similar to a jet engine. On December 13, 2024, while the vehicle was being driven in freezing temperatures, the heat pump compressor made different noise that sounded that internal pieces were being broken. After that, the dashboard showed the following error "Thermal system fault detected. Service it if the problem persists". After this, there was no heat available for the cabin. Service center replaced the compressor under warranty.

The 15mm nut securing the 2nd row seat track, behind the passenger front seat, was not secure and the seat track moved in all directions by several millimeters. The nut was stripped and could not be tightened. This manufacturing defect was repaired by Rivian. I am writing to report a serious safety incident involving my 2026 Rivian R1S. While I was slowly parking the vehicle, it suddenly experienced what appears to be unintended acceleration, causing the car to lunge forward uncontrollably and crash directly into my home. This resulted in significant property damage as well as injuries to the passengers inside the vehicle. Earlier in the drive, I had also reported experiencing electronic and system irregularities, which now seem potentially related to this failure. Given the severity of the inciden…

I would like to file a safety concern regarding the vehicles rear doors. The manual latch is covered by a strong piece of plastic that cannot be opened in a quick emergency. I am very worried as I drive with family and I don’t want them to potentially be stuck. The front doors have an easy manual latch right next to the electric door open button, and I would like to report this concern as the back doors should also have a manual latch just like the front. The current latches genuinely are difficult to open.

Summary of the problem: The rear liftgate on my Rivian failed to detect an obstruction while closing and continued to close despite contact with a person. What happened: While the rear liftgate was automatically closing, I was unaware it was coming down and walked into it. The liftgate made contact with my upper body/face and did not stop or reverse as expected. Instead, it continued closing and forced me to the ground. Safety issue: The liftgate’s safety sensor failed to detect a human obstruction, creating a serious risk of injury. This is …

While I was traveling, I suddenly got a brake light fault, turn signal fault, and front camera fault warning messages that appeared on the computer. Rear driver's side tail light/turn signal light stopped functioning and the rest of the brake lights are stuck on, including the rear third tail light while driving and when vehicle is locked/idle. Rivian had me perform soft and hard resets, but that did not solve these problems. Rivian states they are unable to assist me further until I drive it to a service center located near my home.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
