Recall history
2 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.
26V597000 · Back Over Prevention:Software
Reported: 2026-09-16 (September 16, 2026) · Model years: 2027
Rivian Automotive, LLC (Rivian) is recalling certain 2022-2027 R1S, 2022-2026 R1T, and 2027 R2 vehicles. The rearview camera image may be obstructed by a notification when in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Consequence: An obstructed rearview camera image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Rivian has released an over-the-air (OTA) software update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 9, 2026. Owners may contact Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261. Rivian's number for this recall is FSAM-1866. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov on November 9, 2026.

Rivian Automotive, LLC (Rivian) is recalling certain 2027 R2 vehicles. A high voltage battery fastener may have been improperly tightened, causing a loss of drive power.
Consequence: A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Rivian will inspect and repair the connection or replace damaged components as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 28, 2026. Owners may contact Rivian customer service at 1-888-748-4261. Rivian's number for this recall is FSAM-1888. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov on November 28, 2026.

| Air Bags | 266.7%ODI 11765936I am reporting a suspected passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) malfunction in my 2027 Rivian R2, delivered September 5, 2026. Shortly after delivery, "Passenger Airbag OFF" repeatedly remained displayed with my adult passenger sitting upright and centered, with her back against the seatback. She was approximately 125 lb initially and weighed 127 lb at our latest check. Despite following Rivian's seating guidance, I estimate the OFF indication is present more than 90% of the time. In-cabin video shows the immediate moment of power disengagement after an upward stalk motion occurs (that controls the vehicle's drive modes). Rivian's report omitted this, despite being sent the trimmed 1-second clip (should be watched in slow-motion and/or frame-by-frame to view the HUD and action). Speeds reached over 90-mph. HUD clearly shows simultaneous braking and power output. Rivian's statement is that it is simply incorrect installation of floor mats; however, their enginee… |

It also has had prior issues with a passenger weighing 120lbs. The sensor only works when the 102lb passenger slams her body weight down on the seat and then immediately buckles in. This puts her safety at risk. Rivian has inspected the seat and sensor twice and refused to replace for fear of the same problem happening again anyway. They have told me the sensor is working as designed. |

Emerging complaint spikes
Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.
This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.
No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
Equal-age model-year comparison
Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
No selected model years have a complete observation window. Choose an eligible year or a shorter window.
Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
