Recall history

4 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

17V721000 · Equipment

Reported: 2017-11-16 (November 16, 2017) · Model years: 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017

Smeal Holding LLC (Smeal) is recalling certain 2013-2017 Aerial and Pumper Fire Apparatus vehicles, equipped with Hale pressure relief valves in the water pumps used for fire fighting. Rings securing the valves may corrode over time after exposure to water, causing the ring to fail and the pressure relief valve to open, reducing the water pressure available for fire fighting.

Consequence: A reduction in water pressure may hinder fire fighting efforts, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: Smeal will notify owners, and Hale service providers will install a remedy kit, free of charge. The recall began on December 11, 2017. Owners may contact Smeal customer service at 1-800-543-5008 or Hale customer service at 1-800-533-3569. Smeal's number for this recall is 17028.

16V583000 · Power Train:Manual Transmission

Reported: 2016-08-04 (August 4, 2016) · Model years: 2015, 2016

Smeal Fire Apparatus Co., Inc. (Smeal) is recalling certain model year 2015-2016 Smeal Aerial and Pumper fire trucks manufactured July 16, 2015, to August 1, 2016. The affected vehicles may be equipped with certain C20 and C21 split-shaft transmissions from Waterous. This transmission sends power to the wheels of an emergency response vehicle or powers an add-on unit such as a water pump used for fighting fires. A component within the shift unit may be damaged and as a result, the operator may not be able to switch the power output.

Consequence: If the power output cannot be changed, once the fire truck arrives at the scene, it may not be able to pump water to aid in extinguishing the fire, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: Smeal will notify owners, and dealers will remove the shift unit assembly and replace the clevis pin and retaining rings, free of charge. The recall began on September 12, 2016. Owners may contact Smeal customer service at 1-877-415-8628.

21V005000 · Equipment

Reported: 2021-01-12 (January 12, 2021) · Model years: 2020

Smeal Holding, LLC (Smeal) is recalling certain 2020 Aerial and Pumper vehicles, equipped with battery-powered 3600 wireless remote controller units used to control the movement of electric firefighting monitors in firefighting vehicles. The monitor is used to direct the water stream and adjust the spray pattern. The wireless remote controller's sleep mode is disabled, which results in the batteries discharging faster than normal.

Consequence: Inability to use the wireless remote controller may hinder the firefighting efforts, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: Smeal will notify owners, and dealers will ask the customer to return the affected controller to Akron Brass for a software update, free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2021. Owners may contact Smeal customer service at 1-800-867-6478. Smeal's number for this recall is 20-17.

21V810000 · Equipment

Reported: 2021-10-15 (October 15, 2021) · Model years: 2021

Smeal Holding, LLC (Smeal) is recalling one 2021 Pumper Fire Apparatus fire truck equipped with a Cummins generator set. The lifting cables may be improperly crimped.

Consequence: An improperly crimped cable may come out of place during a lifting operation, possibly causing the generator set to fall, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy: Cummins will inspect the lifting cable, and either replace the cable or install a warning label, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on November 12, 2021. Owners may contact Smeal's customer service at 1-800-867-6478. Smeal's number for this recall is 21015.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
