Owner report 11354420 · 2020-09-11 (September 11, 2020)

I WAS TRAVELING AT ABOUT 55 MPH ON HIGHWAY 66 WHEN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL BEGAN FLASHING THE FOLLOWING WARNINGS: "BRAKING POWER LOW, PHSB MALFUNCTION, PARKING BRAKE LOW, PRE-COLLISION MALFUNCTION, ANTI-LOCK MALFUNCTION, LANE DEPARRURE MALFUNCTION, BRAKE OVERIDE" . THE ONLY OBVIOUS SYMPTOM WAS THAT THERE WAS NO BRAKE BOOST - THE BRAKES CONTINUED TO FUNCTION, BUT WITHOUT POWER ASSIST. I AM A FORMER AUTO MECHANIC, SO I WOULD HAVE NOTICED IF THERE WERE ANY OTHER SYMPTONS. THE DEALERSHIP HAD THE CAR FOR 3 WEEKS AND ULTIMATELY REPLACED BOTH THE BRAK…

Owner report 11663559 · 2025-05-28 (May 28, 2025)

Exhaust heat-exchanger coolant pipe (part of the hybrid cooling loop) on my 2019 Toyota Prius is the system that failed. Safety risk: complete loss of coolant can cause sudden engine overheating and possible power reduction or shutdown while the vehicle is moving. I transport two young children daily; an unexpected stall on a highway or during an intersection turn would put all occupants and surrounding traffic at risk. AutoNation Toyota Mall of Georgia (dealer) inspected the car on 22-May-2025, confirmed the leak, and advised the vehicle is un…

Owner report 11572747 · 2024-02-19 (February 19, 2024)

On Saturday [XXX], while shifting to reverse in a back alley to back up slowly, the car engine suddenly and loudly revved and shot backwards at accelerating speed. I slammed on brakes which did not respond at all, thus forcing me to attempt to shift gears which also failed to stop the acceleration. Car only stopped because it went up a curb and hit the corner of a parked vehicle in a neighbors driveway. If I had been on busier street and not a back alley this could have resulted in numerous vehicle collisions and unimagined fatalities. Car…

Body of car has rust perforation starting from the inside working out. This is on the roof, so water incursion will effect airbags and electrical system. FIrst noticed rust bubbles a few years ago, but did not think much of it. Now two body shops have said roof panel needs to be replaced. This is big stuff!

Since October 2023, my 2019 Toyota Prius has developed severe and unpredictable driving behavior after a regular brake service, which may have triggered or coincided with a software or ECU update. The car, which had been driving smoothly since I bought it in 2021, suddenly began showing false braking, steering interference, and lane instability , as if the car were trying to “correct” problems that didn’t exist. These interventions often happen on highways or during turns, creating serious safety risks for both driver and passengers. I’ve spen…

WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT, ALL LIGHTS, ESPECIALLY RED IN COLOR, WHICH ARE VIEWED FROM FRONT WINDSHIELD, APPEAR AS THREE DISTINCT IMAGES. There is a safety design flaw with the dash lights. If the headlights are ON The dash lights are turned down to a significantly lower illumination automatically and cannot be turned back up to full brightness. This is a big issue when driving with your head lights on during daylight rain/fog. The dash lights won't turn up to full brightness and are very difficult to read, especially for anyone over 50 years old when the head lights are turned on. Alabama law requires head lights be on, not just DRL, but head lights. The dash is VERY dim…

The headlights at night are too low. They only illuminate 1 car's length away and Toyota doesn't want to touch it to raise it more. I asked my local dealer SF Toyota Service Center, where I said "It feels dangerous", and they just kinda shrugged their shoulders. This is not a defect, it seems to be as intended (or at least as rolled off the factory floor) because other 2023 Prius owners agree it is aimed too low. Someone believes they were "optimized" for the Radar Cruise Control camera, and not the driver. Some also report that an internal …

THIS IS A BRAND NEW CAR I PURCHASED. THERE IS A HIGH-PITCHED NOISE THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL MAKES WHEN YOU DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL. I THOUGHT THIS WAS PART OF THE BEEPS THE CAR MAKES, BUT IT'S NOT. THE BRAKE BOOSTER WAS REPLACED, BUT THE BRAKE PEDAL CONTINUES TO MAKE A HIGH-PITCHED CHIRPING NOISE. I RETURNED TO TOYOTA SERVICE TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT, BUT THEY SAID THAT THIS IS A NORMAL SOUND THAT OTHER PRIUSES MAKE. This NHTSA web site adivses owners to "file an online complaint" if "... the manufacturer has failed to remedy the recall in a timely manner..." It is NHTSA #24V274 and has been active for 11 weeks without the manufacturer's remedy. There is no public estimate of a date for this recall to be addressed, except for a vague "third quarter of 2024" which implies an additional 11 weeks for any remedy to be provided. I think that 22 weeks is not a remedy in a "timely manner."

Carfax notified us that our vehicle was part of a recall on 9/24/21. Toyota never contacted us. I contacted Toyota Corporate the week of Oct. 18th and they contacted the dealer (Hudson Toyota in Jersey City) and the dealer said they had a fix. I brought it in and the service department said there was a mistake and the fix wasn't available. When I contacted them again the week of Oct. 25th they said they had a fix and made me a service appointment on Nov. 9th. However when I went on NHTSA website it says that consumers will only be notified …

Coolant is leaking into the catalytic converter. This seems to be a common issue. Toyota issued a technical service bulletin on XXX covering this exactly. Car…

I was idling at a parking space and went to turn off my car. The vehicle surged forward and the BRAKE sign came on. I pushed my brake to the floor and nothing happened. I was moving toward a brick wall so I put in in reverse and the car surged backwards. The BRAKE sign came on and I pushed the brake to the floor and again nothing happened and I ended up hitting the car behind me. I immediately took my car to the dealership where they kept it for 3 days and said they could find nothing wrong and it was safe to drive. I just got it back from hav…

I’ve spen…

BOUGHT A NEW 2019 PRIUS FROM GROSSINGER TOYOTA ON 9/13, WENT BACK TO THE DEALER ON 9/16 TO GET MY OLD CITY STICKER FROM MY OLD CAR (THIS NEW CAR ONLY HAD 61 MILES), THE NEW CAR BROKE WHILE I WAS THERE. THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD WENT OFF (BLINDERS CANNOT BE TURN ON. NO INDICATION OF SPEED, NO INDICATION OF VEHICLE LEVEL, ETC). ANYTHING THAT'S ON THE DASHBOARD WENT BLANK. I TURNED ON AND OFF THE NEW CARD A FEW TIME, BUT THE RESULT WAS THE SAME. TOYOTA TECHNICIAN COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT WENT WRONG THEMSELVES. WHEN THAT HAPPENED, I WAS JUST ABOUT REA…

* I was pulling into a parking space at a slow speed. When I applied the brake the car accelerated causing the car to scrape the car next to the space. The car then stopped. * The acceleration was out of my control and the brakes did not stop it. Fortunately there was no person in front of me. * The Tow truck operator who came to get the car experienced the same issue when pulling into the bay at the dealer. I do not know about the manufacturer during their inspection as they did not provide me with that information. * Toyota had an inspection…

I BOUGHT A BRAND NEW 2019 PRIUS FROM THE DEALERSHIP THAT I WORK AT. ONLY A MONTH LATER, THE PRE COLLISION SYSTEM STARTED BECOME UNAVAILABLE AND THE ENGINE STARTED MAKING A LOUD CRANKING NOISE. I TOOK IT TO TOYOTA AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THE PCS MILIMETRE WAVE SENSOR WAS MISSING FROM THE CAR. THEY ALSO DID NOT WANT TO FIX THE ENGINE PROBLEM OR EVEN LOOK INTO IT DESPITE STILL HAVING WARRANTY LEFT.

A few weeks ago, at around 10pm, when I was driving on the freeway, my car’s engine temperature warning light suddenly on. The next day, I immediately sent my car to the dealer for a check up, the report stated ‘’ coolant reservoir very low. Pressure tested system found exhaust center pipe leaking coolant internally’’. I was surprised by the problem as I only drove this car for around 3.5 years with 70,000 miles, after talking with friends and doing research, I just realized that was problems for many Toyota owners. I was told by the dealer, t…

Upon taking the vehicle to a dealer, he requested to have the rotors checked for any defects. He was given a service report that stated that the rotors needed to be replaced.
