ALL OF THE BALL JOINTS ON THIS VEHICLE ARE DEFECTIVE; THEY WORE OUT COMPLETELY IN LESS THAN 18,500 MILES OF USE. THIS CAN CAUSE THE WHEELS TO FALL OFF, A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, ACCORDING TO AN INSPECTOR AT AN OFFICIAL MASSACHUSETTS VEHICLE INSPECTION STATION. THE MANUFACTURER ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THE BALL JOINTS ARE DEFECTIVE BUT WILL NOT REPLACE THEM AFTER THE 3 YEAR WARRANTY PERIOD, EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY 18,500 MILES ON IT. ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER, THIS PROBLEM AFFECTS MANY HUMMERS BUILT IN 1995.

Recall history

3 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

95V023000 · Vehicle Speed Control

Reported: 1995-02-13 (February 13, 1995)

WATER CAN ACCUMULATE IN THE CRUISE CONTROL CABLE AND IF THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS BELOW FREEZING AND THE CRUISE CONTROL IS ENGAGED, THE WATER CAN FREEZE CAUSING THE CABLE TO BIND AND NOT RELEASE AS INTENDED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS APPLIED OR THE SYSTEM IS TURNED OFF AT THE MASTER CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH.

Consequence: THE ENGINE THROTTLE CAN STICK OPEN RESULTING IN LOSS OF THROTTLE CONTROL WITH THE INCREASED POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REMOVE THE CURRENT CRUISE CONTROL ACTUATOR AND CABLE ASSEMBLY AND INSTALL A NEW ASSEMBLY. ADDITIONALLY, DEALERS WILL CHANGE THE ROUTING OF THE CABLE.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
95V161000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Storage:Tank Assembly

Reported: 1995-08-18 (August 18, 1995)

UNDER HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES (GREATER THAN 95 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT) AND THE FUEL TANK LEVEL BETWEEN 1/4 AND 1/2 FULL, THE FUEL TANK INTERNAL PRESSURE CAN INCREASE CAUSING THE TANK TO EXPAND. TANK EXPANSION CAUSES AN INTERFERENCE BETWEEN THE FUEL TANK PROTECTIVE SHIELD AND THE PROPELLER SHAFT RESULTING A HOLE IN THE FUEL TANK AT THE POINT OF SHIELD-TO-SHAFT CONTACT.

Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE FUEL LEAKAGE, AND IF AN IGNITION SOURCE IS PRESENT, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A SUPPLEMENTAL FUEL TANK VENTING SYSTEM ON THESE VEHICLES.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
96V049000 · Vehicle Speed Control:Accelerator Pedal

Reported: 1996-03-12 (March 12, 1996)

THE COATING USED TO PROTECT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SHAFT IS INCOMPATIBLE WITH THE BRONZE BUSHING THROUGH WHICH THE SHAFT PASSES. OVER TIME, AND IN THE PRESENCE OF A CORROSIVE ENVIRONMENT (WATER, ROAD SALT), THE SHAFT CAN CORRODE INSIDE THE BUSHING INCREASING THE AMOUNT OF FRICTION BETWEEN THE ROTATING SHAFT AND THE STATIONARY BUSHING.

Consequence: A CORRODED ACCELERATOR PEDAL SHAFT CAN CAUSE THE ENGINE THROTTLE TO BIND AND NOT FULLY RETURN TO IDLE WHEN THE OPERATOR'S FOOT IS REMOVED FROM THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL INCREASING THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A REVISED ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND SHAFT ASSEMBLY.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
