Reported: 1989-01-17 (January 17, 1989)

FUEL INJECTION SEALS MAY HARDEN, DUE TO HIGH TEMPERATURE AND ALCOHOL IN SOME FUELS, AND ALLOW FUEL TO ESCAPE INTO THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT.

Consequence: FUEL DRIPPING ONTO HOT ENGINE COMPONENTS COULD CAUSE ANENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE.

Remedy: REPLACE ENGINES FUEL INJECTOR SEALS WITH IMPROVED SEALS PLUS IMPROVEMENTS DESIGNED TO BETTER INSULATE THE ENGINE AGAINST FIRE RISK.

THE PROBLEM IS ONE THAT IS KNOWN TO MANY OF US A4 OWNERS. IT HAS TO DO WITH VERY POOR BRAKING PERFORMANCE IN WET CONDITIONS. THESE CARS DID NOT COME WITH A SHIELD BEHIND THE FRONT DISCS TO PREVENT WATER FROM ACCUMULATING. THE RESULT IS LITTLE OR NO BRAKING FOR 1-2 SECONDS AFTER THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. I MUST DRAG THE BRAKE PEDAL IN ORDER TO DRY THE DISCS BEFORE THEY WILL PERFORM AS THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO. Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
