The coolant pipe from the engine cylinder head to the coolant reservoir broke unexpectedly which left us stranded on a narrow shoulder on the side of a busy highway with cars streaming by at high speed. A warning lamp directed us not to drive. Our safety was absolutely put at risk obviously. We had it towed to the closest shop doing BMWs. We had it fixed at significant expense. 5 months later, received a letter from BMW (see attached) wrote us admitting they had found this defect and were offering to replace the defective equipment at their c…

Recall history

2 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

17V719000 · Electrical System: Instrument Cluster/Panel

Reported: 2017-11-15 (November 15, 2017)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018 230i, 230i xDrive, M240i, M240i xDrive, M2, and X3 xDrive 30i SAV vehicles. These vehicles may have an error in the software for the instrument panel, causing the display to not properly illuminate. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 101, "Control and Displays."

Consequence: If the display does not illuminate during start up or does not illuminate various control and warning symbols while driving, it can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will update the instrument cluster display software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 8, 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Consequence: A vehicle stall can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the crankshaft sensor, free of charge. The recall began September 6, 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

While driving the vehicle on the Florida turnpike I received the message that the coolant was low, then another message to pull over immediately to prevent engine overheat. I pulled over as soon as I could and the engine ceased to operate. Took the vehicle to a BMW dealership and they told me the engine overheated because a hose from the engine had come undone. 2022 BMW 230i Coupe (VIN: [XXX]) is under an active, high-priority safety recall for an Engine Starter Fire Risk (Recall 26V-438) with a strict "Park Outside" mandate. The manufacturer currently lists the status as "Remedy Not Available" because redesigned replacement parts do not exist yet. On January 30, 2026 BMW was made aware of a problem with their starter motors in their 230 series cars that could result in the mechanism failing or in a worst case scenario, a fire starting. They have been aware of this problem for almost four full months and still have no remedy. This is a blatant safety issue and they have taken no action to correct it.

Vehicle was parked at approximately 3:45 PM. While parked, the vehicle engine caught fire sometime in the next hour, approximately. Many eyewitnesses stated that nobody was seen near the vehicle as it started smoking, and then caught fire, with multiple explosions heard. The engine was completely destroyed, but the passenger cabin did not seem to be impacted. BMW has several recalls out for engines catching fire - this model was not included in this recall, but clearly needs to be.

BMW F Series models between 2008-2021 have issues with rear turn signal malfunctions. On my car, the left turn signal stopped working and caused a fault warning. The dealership said the housing needed to be replaced, but then it started working normally, and then the right rear did the same. Since then, I have had intermittent failures on both the left and right sides. A simple google search shows many complaints about this issue as document here: https://www.google.com/search?q=BMW+rear+turn+signal+malfunction&oq=BMW+rear+turn+signal+malfu…

On 4/17/2025, we purchased 4 BRIDGESTONE tires at Discount Tire Company. The front two tires are model 225 /40 R18 88Y SL BSW BM RF and the rear two tires are model 245 /35 R18 92Y XL BSW BM RF. On 9/3/2025, we had to replace a front tire, due to a hole in the tire from pothole damage going about 40 mph. I can't say the exact safety risk this posed, but a tire getting a hole in it at 40 miles per hour can't be a good thing? These are run-flat tires so they still work but not at high speeds.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.

DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY AT 65MPH, CAR ENGINE JUST SHUTS DOWN. NO POWER STEERING, NO WAY TO GET OVER. CAR DISPLAY SAYS DRIVE TRAIN ERROR. CAR GOT TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR SERVICE, DEALER "FIXES" ISSUE. 2 DAYS LATER, EXACT SAME THING HAPPENS AGAIN ON THE FREEWAY AT 65MPH. ENGINE JUST SHUTS DOWN. TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER. STILL THERE, NO FIX YET. HOWEVER, HOW IS MY WIFE SUPPOSED TO FEEL SAFE IN THIS CAR NOW. IT CAN DIE ON THE FREEWAY AT ANYTIME AND YOU HAVE NO POWER AND TRAFFIC IS ZOOMING BY.
