25V644000 · Electrical System:Starter Assembly

Reported: 2025-09-25 (September 25, 2025)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 340I, X6, 2020-2025 840I, 2020-2022 740LI, 2019-2020 X7, and X5 vehicles. After repeated attempts, the starter motor may overheat from an electrical overload.

Consequence: An overheated starter motor can ignite nearby combustible material in the engine compartment, increasing the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the engine starter, free of charge. This recall includes vehicles repaired under recall 24V576 and those owners will need to have their vehicle repaired again. Owner notification letters were mailed February 9, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov November 17, 2025.

I was driving on an empty highway at about 55 mph and all of a sudden heard a loud bang, after i pulled over i saw that my sunroof was shattered, bmw declined a warranty on it but the car had only 3k miles on it, prior to that accident i was hearing some squeaking noises from my sunroof when it was in fully closed position. After taking it to the dealership not only they declined on the warranty but they failed to investigate and explain the cause stating it was probably the rock hit the glass the caused the problem, i taped the sunroof after i…

SUDDEN ACCELERATION - ON TWO OCCASIONS (JUNE 12 AND 27, 2016), WHILE SLOWING AND COMING TO A STOP (ONCE TO PARK AND ONCE TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT BEHIND ANOTHER VEHICLE), THE CAR BUCKED AND REVVED AND WAS INCREDIBLY HARD TO CONTROL, LURCHING FORWARD. ON THE FIRST OCCASION IT LURCHED FORWARD AT A HIGH RATE OF FORCE AND HIT A FENCE AS I WAS PULLING IN SLOWLY TO PARK - I COULD NOT CONTROL IT WITH THE BRAKE UNTIL I PUT IT IN REVERSE; ON SECOND OCCASION (2 WEEKS LATER), I WAS ON A CITY STREET SLOWING TO 5MPH AND STOPPING AT A RED LIGHT AND SUDDENLY W…

My BMW had a pinhole in the radiator caused by driving on the highway and being impacted by a small foreign object. Apparently a foreign object (rock?) impacted the radiator creating a tiny leak. BMW repaired the vehicle (new radiator) and installed a "Rock Guard" without discussing this new Guard with me. Rock Guard Part # 17-11-8-185-042. This $1,900 repair is a known defect in the design which is why BMW adds the Rock Guard when replacing radiators. After the repair, research indicates this is a common issue for this model car. Loss …

RETURNING FROM A LOCAL GROCERY STORE I DROVE INTO OUR GARAGE AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. IMMEDIATELY I HEARD A LOUD POP FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, LIKE FROM A FIRECRACKER, AND I SAW BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM THE HOOD AND FROM THE LEFT WHEEL WELL. I IMMEDIATELY TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR TO DRIVE OUT OF THE GARAGE. NOTHING WORKED SO I PUSHED THE CAR OUT OF THE GARAGE BY HAND AND RELEASED THE HOOD LATCH. BY NOW THE HOOD'S EXTERNAL SAFETY LATCH WAS SO HOT I COULD NOT RELEASE IT. WITH THE HOOD CLOSED, I WAS UNABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE ENGINE FIRE USIN…

IN MARCH 2017, I WAS DRIVING SOUTHBOUND ON THE RIGHT LANE OF A PARKWAY, WHEN A VEHICLE THAT WAS TWO CARS BEHIND ME, ACCELERATES OUT TO THE MIDDLE LANE, HE LOSES CONTROL OF HIS VEHICLE, HIS CAR GOES TO THE LEFT LANE THEN TURNS AROUND ALMOST PERPENDICULAR TO ME, AND COLLIDES INTO MY VEHICLE PUSHING ME OFF ONTO THE EMBANKMENT, CONTINUING TO COLLIDE INTO MY CAR MULTIPLE TIMES, BEFORE HIS CAR GOES UP INTO THE AIR AND LANDS ON THE HOOD, BACKWARDS. The rear cross traffic alert system is a major safety issue on my 2024 BMW M340i. It basically does not operate. To get any kind of notification that there is a vehicle approaching from either right or left if you are backing up the approaching vehicle has to be traveling at a speed greater than 7 mph and then you only get an alert within 2 seconds of impact. This is a pointless operation as then it is too late to avoid a collision. The window is to narrow to provide any useful alert and safety function. Also, I receive no alert if a pedestrian…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
