Fuel level sensor failure. Fuel gauge showed half a tank full, but it was actually empty. The engine stalled. Brakes do not work with engine stalled. The BMW dealer confirmed the malfunction and said it was a common failure. There were not previous instances of this same problem with my motorcycle. No warnings of any kind.

FUEL PUMP MOUNTING BOSS FOR FUEL LINE CONNECTION CRACKED. FUEL SPRAYS ONTO BACK OF ENGINE AND FLOWS ON TO THE EXHAUST SYSTEM, I SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER BIKE WHEN STOPPED AT END OF DRIVEWAY. SAW FUEL RUNNING DOWN THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE ON TO THE EXHAUST. THE MOTORCYCLE WAS NOT FULLY WARM, IT HAD BEEN RUNNING ONLY 1-2 MINUTES. BASED ON THE FLOW OF LEAKING FUEL, THE MOTORCYCLE WOULD HAVE CAUGHT FIRE WHEN THE ENGINE AND EXHAUST REACHED NORMALLY OPERATING TEMPERATURE. THIS FAILURE HAS BEEN DOCUMENTED AT K-BIKES.COM AND I-BMW.COM AND ON THIS…

MY BMW MOTORCYCLE HAS, ACCORDING TO THE DEALER (CROSS COUNTRY BMWIN METUCHEN NJ) , SUSTAINED A FAILURE REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF THE FINAL DRIVE, AN $1800 PART. THE BIKE HAS BEEN MAINTAINED BY AN AUTHORIZED BMW DEALER ACCORDING TO THE FACTORY SCHEDULE AND HAS NOT BEEN RIDDEN OFF-ROAD OR IN AN AGGRESSIVE MANNER. 37,500 MILES SEEMS LIKE A VERY PREMATURE MILEAGE READING FOR THE BIKE TO SUSTAIN THIS TYPE OF FAILURE. THE BIKE HAS NOT LEAKED ANY FLUIDS FROM THE DRIVE. THIS FAILURE US OF THE SAME TYPE DESCRIBED IN ODI NO. 10439549, AND CURRENTLY BEING…

THIS MOTORCYCLE HAS REPEATEDLY STALLED AS I DECELERATE TO A STOP. THE DAY OF THIS REPORT IT STALLED 5 TIMES. THE DEALER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO DETERMINE WHY THIS HAPPENS AFTER SEVERAL INSPECTIONS BY THE DEALER. THE MOTORCYCLE RESTARTS IMMEDIATELY BUT IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE SINCE BRAKING AND TRAFFIC FLOW PROBLEMS ARE CREATED BY THIS STALLING. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN RECURRING FOR THE YEAR I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE. *TR

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
