ON A 2002 BMW 1150RT THERE IS A GASOLINE LEAK WHICH DRIPS DIRECTLY ON TO THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. IT ONLY LEAKS ON THE FIRST START OF THE DAY. IF RUN FOR A MINUTE OR TWO, SHUT OFF, AND RESTARTED, THE PROBLEM GOES AWAY(?). AFTER THREE CONTACTS WITH THE DEALERS (TWO OF THEM) THEY HAVE FINALLY SAID THEY ARE AWARE OF A PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL AND IT CAN BE EASILY FIXED. CONSIDERING THE POTENTIAL FOR FIRE OR EVEN AN EXPLOSION, I WOULD THINK THEY WOULD WANT TO ADVISE CUSTOMERS OF THIS PROBLEM. ALSO, THEIR DEALERS. *JB

RIDING TO A STOP AND MY FRONT BRAKES LOCKED UP AT ABOUT 10 MPH. THEY FREED UP AND I GOT A BRAKE FAILURE AND ABS WARNING LIGHT ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. AFTER A RESTART, IT WENT AWAY. UPON RESTARTING, I TOOK OFF AND FOUND THAT THE WARNINGS CAME BACK AND I HAD NO REAR BRAKE PEDAL AND ALSO NO FRONT BRAKE PRESSURE AT THE LEVER. CHECKING THE MASTER CYLINDER, I FOUND IT DRY. THE RIGHT FRONT BRAKE HOSE HAD DEVELOPED A LEAK AT THE FITTING. HOW THIS COULD HAVE AFFECTED THE REAR BRAKES, I AM NOT AWARE. DOING RESEARCH, I FIND THAT IT IS A COMMON ISSUE …

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
