HANKOOK TIRES ARE BEING INSTALLED ON VEHICLES WHICH REQUIRE A LOAD RANGE HIGHER THAN A PASSENGER TIRE P235/R16 SL. THESE VEHICLES WEIGH IN AT 24,000 LBS GVW AND AT TIMES CAN BE OVERLOADED. THEY ALSO DO NOT TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE 5% SAFETY FACTOR SINCE THE REARS ARE ON DUALS. TIRES WERE WEARING EXTREMELY FAST AND SOME WERE DEVELOPING SEPARATIONS IN THE TREAD AND SIDEWALL AREAS AS WELL AS A NUMBER OF THEM BLEW OUT. CERTAIN MEDIUM DUTY CHASSIS CABS FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 120, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS FOR MOTOR VEHICLES OTHER THAN PASSENGER CARS." THE TIRE PLACARD LABEL AND INCOMPLETE VEHICLE LABEL MAY HAVE INCORRECT METRIC (KPA) TIRE PRESSURE INFORMATION (TIRE INFLATION PRESSURE SHOWN IN ENGLISH UNITS (PSI) IS CORRECT), AND TRANSPOSED TIRE SIZE AND RIM SIZE INFORMATION.

Reported: 2003-08-28 (August 28, 2003)

CERTAIN MEDIUM DUTY CHASSIS CABS FAIL TO COMPLY TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 121, "AIR BRAKE SYSTEMS." THE AIR BRAKE LINES MAY BE MISROUTED BETWEEN THE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY RESERVOIR TANKS OF THE AIR BRAKE SYSTEM.

Consequence: IF THE AIR BRAKE LINES ARE MISROUTED, AND THE AIR BRAKE SYSTEM EXPERIENCES A LOSS OF AIR FROM THE PRIMARY AIR TANK, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT HAVE SERVICE AIR BAKE FUNCTION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: FORD WILL INSPECT THE AIR BRAKE LINE ROUTING AND IF NECESSARY, REPAIR THE VEHICLE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 12, 2003. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT FORD AT 1-800-248-0186.

Brakes do not have proper stopping power. The brakes are very slow to react, and the brake pedal has a long travel before the truck starts to slow down. This can be extremely dangerous in city driving. We have four of these F-650s in our fleet, and all four of these trucks exhibit the same poor braking. Trucks are all new with hydraulic brakes.

Driver reported an intermittent odor of burning oil or hot brakes from rear wheels. Found rear axle wheel seal leaking gear oil; brake pads soaked, and gear oil pooling in wheel. This could compromise braking, and neglecting the leak would cause damage to the rear differential or cause the rear differential to lock up. Took to Ford dealer, who confirmed wheel seal leak & also found leaking pinion seal on steering. Repaired under warranty.
