Recall history

2 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

04V465000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Storage:Tank Assembly

Reported: 2004-09-30 (September 30, 2004)

ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES, A CONDITION OCCURS THAT COULD ALLOW PRESSURE TO BUILD UP IN THE FUEL TANK. ON FUEL INJECTED VEHICLES, THIS CONDITION COULD CAUSE FUEL TO SPRAY OUT UNEXPECTEDLY WHEN THE FUEL CAP IS REMOVED. ON CARBURETED VEHICLES, EXCESSIVE FUEL COULD BE TRANSFERRED TO THE CARBURETOR, WHICH WOULD EVENTUALLY ALLOW FUEL TO DRIP FROM THE AIR CLEANER.

Consequence: THESE SITUATIONS COULD CAUSE SERIOUS PERSONAL INJURY OR CREATE A FIRE HAZARD FOR PERSONS OR PROPERTY ON OR NEAR THE MOTORCYCLE.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL TEST EACH CANISTER FOR BLOCKAGE, THEN REPLACE AS NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN NOVEMBER 4, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HARLEY-DAVIDSON AT 1-414-343-4056.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
04V607000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Carburetor System

Reported: 2004-12-23 (December 23, 2004)

CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES MAY HAVE BEEN PRODUCED WITH DEFECTIVE FUEL SHUT-OFF VALVES. THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE 'ON' POSITION AND THE 'RESERVE' POSITION OF THE VALVE MAY HAVE BEEN REVERSED.

Consequence: IF THE BIKE WERE OPERATING WITH THE VALVE IN THE 'ON' POSITION, THE BIKE COULD RUN OUT OF FUEL, THE EXPECTED FUEL RESERVE WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE. THIS COULD LEAD TO THE DRIVER RUNNING OUT OF GAS WITHOUT WARNING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FUEL VALVE AND REPLACE IT, IF NECESSARY. THE RECALL BEGAN FEBRUARY 7, 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HARLEY-DAVIDSON AT 1-414-342-4080.

I WAS OUT RIDING WITH MY HUSBAND AND MY FRIEND AND WE HAD JUST COME OVER THE HIGH RISE BRIDGE FROM BEAUFORT TO MOREHEAD CITY AND WAS SITTING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND I WENT TO GO, THE REAR TIRE WOULD NOT MOVE AND A VERY ODD/LOUD NOISE CAME FROM THE REAR OF THE BIKE TO WHICH MY HUSBAND SAID TO ME TO SHUT THE BIKE OFF. MY BIKE HAD SHEERED ALL FIVE OF THE BOLTS OFF THAT HOLD THE REAR SPROCKET ONTO THE BACK TIRE AND THEY LOCKED THE TIRE IN A FIXED POSITION. I WAS DOING 70 (MPH) EAST HWY 52 AND I HEARD A LOUD POP AND MY MOTORCYCLE (H-D) STARTED GOING OUT OF CONTROL. I THOUGHT IT WAS A REAR WHEEL BLOW-OUT, I WAS LUCKY TO KEEP IT UNDERCONTROL AND PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER NEXT TO THE #1 LANE. A FRIEND WAS RIDING BEHIND ME ON HIS H-D AND SAW THE WHOLE THING. AFTER WE STOPPED, WE LOOKED AT THE REAR WHEEL AND DID NOT SEE ANY THING VISIBLE. ALTHOUGH MY FRIEND SAW MY REAR WHEEL WOBBLE AND HE THOUGHT I WAS GOING DOWN. I CALLED AMERICA ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TO PICK ME UP AND TAKE THE BIKE TO SAN DIEGO …

I PURCHASED A HARLEY DAVIDSON LOW RIDER FROM SOUTHSIDE HARLEY IN VIRGINIA BEACH, VA. THE HORN DOES NOT WORK. I HAVE HAD IT BACK TO THEM TWICE, THEY OIL IT, I GET IT BACK ON THE ROAD, AND IT DOESN'T WORK. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT READ ME AN INTEROFFICE MEMO STATING BASICALLY THAT HARLEY RECOGNIZES THAT THEIR HORN CONSISTENTLY DOES NOT WORK AND RECOMMENDING SEVERAL THINGS THAT CAN BE DONE TO FIX IT, BUT EVERYONE I TALK WITH SAYS IT IS A CONISISTEN PROBLEM. IT IS A TREMENDOUS SAFEY FACTOR ESPECIALLY FOR A NOVICE RIDER IN MY OPINION. THE DEALERS…

COMPLAINT REGARDING THE SALE OF NEW AND USED HARLEY DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE WITH RED TURN SIGNALS VS THE USUAL ORANGE YELLOW WARNING SIGNALS. I ALMOST COLLIDED WITH A 2008 HARLEY DAVIDSON DYNA FAT BOY RECENTLY, THE SMALL RED SIGNAL WAS NOT AT ALL VISIBLE WHEN HE TURNED IN FRONT OF ME WITHOUT EVEN USING HIS BRAKE LIGHTS. I VIEWED HIS MOTORCYCLE AND ALSO NOTICED NEW MOTOR CYCLES WITH THE SAME SMALL RED TURN SIGNALS. AS A RETIRED LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER (32 YEARS) MOTOR CYCLE COP, (2009) THIS IS GOING TO CAUSE ACCIDENTS, AND DEATHS THIS IS A SAFET…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
