Recall history

2 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

89V184000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Foundation Components:Hoses, Lines/Piping, And Fittings

Reported: 1989-11-02 (November 2, 1989)

A FATIGUE CRACK IN THE REAR BRAKE LINE ASSEMBLY COULD DEVELOP.

Consequence: THIS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID AND LOSS OF REARBRAKE OPERATION WHICH WOULD REDUCE STOPPING ABILITY AND INCREASE POTENTIAL FORAN ACCIDENT.

Remedy: INSTALL REPLACEMENT REAR BRAKE LINE COMPONENTS.

THIS ISN'T A COMPLAINT, IT'S AN OBSERVATION. I OWN A HARLEY DAVIDSON THAT HAS A SOLID CAST ALUMINUM REAR WHEEL. THE VALVE STEM IS VISIBLE ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE WHEEL AS YOU LOOK TOWARD THE FRONT OF THE BIKE. THIS IS THE SAME SIDE OF THE BIKE THAT THE MUFFLERS AND THE REAR BRAKE DISC ARE MOUNTED. IF A RIDER ATTEMPTS TO PUT AIR IN THE REAR TIRE IMMEDIATELY AFTER STOPPING, THE MUFFLERS ARE VOLCANIC HOT, AND THE REAR DISK IS ALSO QUITE HOT. THE RIDER IS FORCED BY DESIGN OF THE WHEEL TO PUT HIS OR HER HANDS DANGEROUSLY CLOSE TO ITEMS ON THE …

CARBURETION SYSTEM HAS HAD REPEATED FAILURES. INITALLY THE GAS-AIR MIXTURE WAS SO LEAN THAT THE UNIT SPUTTERED REPEATEDLY. THIS CAN BE A FATAL EVENT ON A SLOW CURVE WHEN A MOTORCYCLE IS AT ITS MAXIMUM LEAN ANGLE AND THE ENGINE SPUTTER CAN IN FACT BECOME A SPONTANEOUS ENGINE SHUT-DOWN. THE UNIT WAS RE-JETTED SEVERAL TIMES AND THEN A NEW OEM CARBURETOR WAS INSTALLED REJETTED WITH A LARGE SIZE SLOW JET. THE ENRICHED GAS-AIR FLOW STOPPED THE SPUTTERING BUT APPARENTLY RESULTED IN CARBON BUILD UP THAT WAS SUFFICIENTLY BAD TO CAUSE THE ENGINE TO …

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
