Reported: 2009-04-16 (April 16, 2009)
HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 188,282 MY 2001-2004 SONATA AND MY 2001-2004 XG300 AND XG350 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. ROAD SALT APPLIED IN THESE JURISDICTIONS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS MAY RESULT IN PROGRESSIVE, INTERNAL CORROSION OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME ON THE VEHICLES, AND MAY RESULT IN THINNING OR PERFORATION OF THE SUB-FRAME STEEL. THE CORROSION IS FREQUENTLY VISIBLE AND OFTEN DISCOVERED DURING INSPECTION OR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, AND OWNERS MAY ALSO HEAR NOISES OR NOTICE TIRE MISALIGNMENT AND STEERING PULL. IF THESE SIGNALS ARE UNDETECTED OR UNHEEDED, THE CORROSION MAY PROGRESS AND THE FORWARD MOUNTING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM MAY DETACH FROM THE SUB-FRAME.
Consequence: IF THAT HAPPENS, THE VEHICLE MAY LOSE DRIVE POWER TO THE WHEELS, AND THE FRONT WHEEL MAY MAKE CONTACT WITH THE FENDER OR WHEEL WELL, THEREBY INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL MEASURE THE THICKNESS OF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME AND INSPECT THE FRONT SUB-FRAME FOR CORROSION DAMAGE AND, IF NECESSARY, THE FRONT SUB-FRAME WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW SUB-FRAME THAT INCORPORATES ADDITIONAL HOLES IN THE UPPER AND LOWER PANELS. IF THE FRONT SUB-FRAME DOES NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT, THE DEALER WILL ADD DRAINAGE HOLES TO THE SUB-FRAME AND WILL TREAT THE SUB-FRAME WITH RUST-PROOFING MATERIAL TO STOP THE CORROSION PROCESS. THIS PROCEDURE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING APRIL 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT THE HYUNDAI CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-800-633-5151.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND ALMOST CUT-OFF. TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALER AND THE PROBLEM IS MAJOR (ELECTRONIC TRANSMITTER (VALVES) SPARK PLUG WIRES). PREVIOUSLY I'VE HAD TWO RECALLS. I NEED SOME ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING HYUNDAI CARS. VERY INCONVENIENCING. TS
I HAVE A HYUNDAI 2001 XG300. SINCE MY PURCHASE IN 2001 UP UNTIL PRESENT AT VARIOUS AND UNPREDICTABLE TIMES, WHEN I ACCELERATE THE TRANSMISSION STUTTERS/ SHUDDERS CAUSING A NOTICEABLE DELAY IN ACCELERATION. THIS CONDITION IS AT ALL SPEEDS BUT NOTABLE BETWEEN 35-43 MPH 55-65 MPH. WHEN I'M TRYING TO PASS ANOTHER VEHICLE OR IF I WOULD ACCELERATE TO MOVE OUT-OF ANOTHER VEHICLES WAY I WOULD BE BOGGED DOWN WITH A STUTTER/SHUDDER FROM THE TRANSMISSION WHICH MAY CAUSE AN UNSAFE CONDITION. I'VE BEEN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE BEEN VERY HELPFUL AND …
MY HYUNDAI 2003 XG 350 HAD INCIDENTS OF LURCHING POWERFULLY FORWARD OR BACKWARD EVEN THOUGH MY FOOT WOULD BE PRESSED HARD ON THE BRAKES. IT HAPPENED THREE TIMES. THE THIRD TIME IT DID IT, I HAD IT IN REVERSE WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKES AND WHILE MY WIFE WAS TRYING TO ENTER THE CAR ON THE PASSENGER SEAT SIDE, THE CAR RABBIT JUMBED BACKWARD AND CAUSE HER INJURIES THAT WARRANTED TAKING HER TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM ON SEPTEMBER 12 2005. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND OUT THAT MANY OTHER OWNERS HAD THE SAME EXACT EXPERIENCE AND THAT THEY ALL HAD TROU…

TRAVELING AT 45 TO 55 MPH, ENGINE STALLED AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. IT LED TO LOST OF POWER AND ACCELERATION ON THE VEHICLE. *LA THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES, BECAUSE THE ENGINE LIGHT CONTINUED TO ILLUMINATE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED, THERE WAS A CRACKING SOUND UNDER THE VEHICLE, THERE WAS A WIND NOISE AND A VIBRATION COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE INJECTORS, GASKETS, IGNITION SENSOR AND THROTTLE BODY WERE REPLACED. *JB

Emerging complaint spikes
Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.
This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.
No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
Equal-age model-year comparison

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
