Recall history

1 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

14V044000 · Exterior Lighting:Headlights

Reported: 2014-02-10 (February 10, 2014)

Yamaha Motor Corporation USA (Yamaha) is recalling certain model year 2009-2013 YZFR1 motorcycles manufactured October 2008 through August 2013 and 2012-2013 XTZ12 motorcycles manufactured October 2011 through August 2013. In the affected motorcycles, use of the headlight may generate enough heat to cause the bulb connections to expand, resulting in arcing in the headlight bulb socket which could cause the socket to overheat, melt and cause the headlight to malfunction.

Consequence: A headlight failure reduces the rider's ability to see clearly and the motorcycle's visibility to oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Yamaha will notify owners and dealers will replace the headlight socket, free of charge. The recall began on March 10, 2014. Owners may contact Yamaha at 1-800-962-7926.

YZF R1 STALLS OUT WHEN ENGINE TEMPERATURE IN LESS THAN 170 DEGREES. WHILE APPROACHING FIRST STOP, SHIFTING TO NEUTRAL IT STALLS OUT REGULARLY. EXTREMELY HIGH IDLE (JUMPS FROM 1000 TO 3000 RPM) WHEN ENGINE TEMPERATURE EXCEEDS 200 DEGREES. REPLACED THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR, SUB-WIRING HARNESS, ADJUSTED THE THROTTLE BODIES. THE 2007 YAMAHA YZF-R1 HAS TWO ISSUES THAT HAVE COME TO MY ATTENTION. FIRST, THERE IS A LAG IN THE 2ND GEAR MAPPING THAT SIGNIFICANTLY DECREASES HORSEPOWER AT 5500 RPM WHEN THE THROTTLE IS OPENED. SECOND, THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS INSTANCES OF THE REAR SETS (THE HARDWARE WHERE YOUR FEET REST) CRACKING. BOTH IF THESE ITEMS ARE SAFETY ISSUES THAT COULD LEAD TO FATAL ACCIDENTS. *JB

THE 2007 YAMAHA YZF-R1 HAS SIGNIFICANT LAG OR AFLAT-SPOT" IF YOU WILL AT APPROXIMATELY 48 MPH IN SECOND GEAR. ANY ATTEMPT TO ROLL ON THE THROTTLE AT THAT POINT WILL RESULT IN THE BIKE NEARLY STALLING AND OR CUTTING OUT BEFORE SLOWLY ACCELERATING. THIS CREATES A DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR ANY OWNERS OF THE MOTORCYCLE. IF YOU EVER HAD TO ACCELERATE OUT OF A PROBLEM AT THAT SPEED, YOU MIGHT AS WELL JUST BRACE FOR IMPACT. ALSO, 45 MPH IS A VERY COMMON SPEED LIMIT IN OUR LOCAL AREA, AND IT WAS NOT A PLEASANT FEELING WHEN YOU ROLL ON THE THROTTLE AN…

AT THE TIME OF THIS REPORT THERE HAS BEEN NO OFFICIAL RECALL FOR THIS MOTORCYCLE. I JUST WANTED TO MAKE AWARE THAT MYSELF HAVE BEEN TOLD TO NOR RIDE THIS MOTORCYCLE AS THE SECOND GEAR IN THE TRANSMISSION COULD FAIL AND CAUSE CATASTOPHIC FAILURE, RESULTING IN INJURY AND OR DEATH TO RIDER. THIS EFFECTS ALL 2015 YAMAHA R1...MODEL YEAR 2015. YAMAHA IS AWARE OF THIS BUT MOST PEOPLE HAVE NOT BEEN NOTIFIED AND ARE STILL OPERATING THESE MOTORCYCLE WITH A KNOWN DEFECT.

RUMORS AROSE ABOUT AN INTENT TO RECALL ALL 2015 YAMAHA YZFR1/R1M MOTORCYCLES DUE TO A SERIOUS MANUFACTURING DEFECT IN THE 2ND GEAR WHEEL AND PINION OF THE TRANSMISSION. Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
