The Balmar charge controller for the coach lithium batteries failed. The controller is rated for temperatures up to 90 C (194 F). Based on Ekko forum discussions I suspected the controller, which is located in close proximity to the passenger side turbocharger was overheating. I fashioned an improvised heat shield between the turbocharger and controller and after driving in 74 F ambient conditions measured temperatures of 285 F on the heat shield and 185 F at the controller surface. I also added heat shielding to the controller wiring, which is…

Winnebago recall 174 (NHTSA campaign 23V234000) regarding improper electrical wiring design and installation by Winnebago was recently completed on my RV. After completion of this recall I experienced another electrical fire in the engine compartment (my alternator had previously caught fire due to wiring and design defects noted in Winnebago recall 174). In 2023 Winnebago and Ford introduced a new blind spot monitoring system because the old one would fail so easily. Last August 2023 we had Recall 174 completed at Winnebago’s factory service center. This was for the Balmar 2nd alternator, Regulator, and wiring harness. This morning around 6:45am upon starting the vehicle I smelled smoke. Since this is common when the alternator fails I checked our lithionics battery app to discovery we were not inputting any amperage to our house batteries from the 2nd alternator. The Balmar alternator is going bad on my 2023 transit on my 2024 Winnebago Ekko. It is starting to whine which in the past leads to a fire in the engine compartment on others units. It is recommended to pull the 4 wire plug that goes Balmar regulator in the lithonics battery compartment, which I did to prevent any additional damage. So without the Balmar unit the batteries will only charge plugged into shore power. A Winnebago group recommended reporting this problem to NHTSA Thank you.

The balmar regulator/ 2nd alternator is failing and presenting a fire hazard based off of Winnebago’s own reports and other owners who have experienced fires to their Ekkos. Belt separation occurred at legal highway speed, specified inflation pressure, and within load parameters of the vehicle. Many other owners have reported the same occurring. The belt separation caused the tire to be out of round and caused severe vibration. I am the owner of a 2022 Winnebago Ekko. My vehicle is subject to NHTSA Recall 24V-024 (Winnebago Campaign #181) regarding the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system. I am writing to request your guidance on how to proceed, as I am currently unable to obtain the required safety remedy. My local authorized dealer, has declined to open a repair order, stating that their internal system marks the recall as 'closed' due to a previous service campaign (74-05). Despite providing them with the official NHTSA Dealer Notification for Campaign #181, which cl…

Following recall repairs for NHTSA ID Number: 24V541000, melting wires were noticed coming out of the roof solar port. These are approximately 6” of 10 gauge wires taking current from the solar roof port to the upgraded wiring from the previous recall. This section of 10 gauge wiring is undersized for the peak electrical load.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

This is allegedly related to the Balmar relay system installed by Winnebago in the Ford Transit van.It is currently at the dealer, Colonial Winnebago, in Millstone Twp., NJ. Dealer can be contacted for inspection. We began traveling at a 25 mph speed for about 2 miles when smoke began to flow from under the hood. We pulled over to inspect; 911 was called. Smoke and flames under the hood were visible and continued until the fire truck came and extinguished the fire. Our safety and the safety of others was put at risk as the unit did not display…

Balmar alternator or regulator fails to work as designed. No charging of batteries when idling or driving. This is a Safety Issue because fires have been reported as a result of these electrical system failures. Lithionics (battery) app confirms no charge reaching the batteries, see attached screenshots. Potential Risk of Fire when not working properly as evidenced by others with Balmar failures as reported to NHTSA. This is the 3rd failure we have encountered: 1st failure confirmed by Winnebago, and was replaced with like parts. 2nd failu…

40 amp fuse for Solar charger burned. Replaced fuse and fuse holder became too hot to hold with bare hand but didn't blow the fuse. This type of heat causes a risk of fire inside the motorhome. Currently unable to use solar, a significant element of our ability to enjoy the rig.

the blind spot monitoring system has never worked correctly. Originally when a vehicle appeared in the left hand (driver side) blind spot, the right hand warning light (indicating vehicle in passenger side blind spot) would illuminate - then vice versa. A vehicle in the passenger side blind spot would result in the driver side warning light illuminating. This would cause the driver to think that there was a vehicle in a blind spot on the wrong side of the vehicle. if acted on the driver could maneuver in a way that would cause rather than avoid…
