Recall history

2 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

15V410000 · Electrical System:Alternator/Generator/Regulator

Reported: 2015-06-29 (June 29, 2015) · Model years: 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015

Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA (Yamaha) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 WR250X motorcycles manufactured June 1, 2008, to June 1, 2011 and 2008-2015 WR250R motorcycles manufactured June 1, 2008, to June 1, 2015. In the affected motorcycles, the insulation on the stator coil, a component of the alternator, may become damaged and short circuit to due insufficient heat resistance.

Consequence: If the stator coil is not insulated, the motorcyle will not charge and the battery will go dead, causing the engine to stall which increases the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Yamaha will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stator coil with one that has sufficient heat resistance, free of charge. The recall began on July 30, 2015. Owners may contact Yamaha customer service at 1-800-962-7926.

RECEIVED RECALL NOTIFICATION TELLING ME NOT TO DRIVE MY MOTORCYCLE UNTIL REPAIR MADE. (MIDDLE OF SUMMER, BTW) . CONTACTED DEALER, TOLD PART WAS BACK ORDERED. GOT A CALL ONE MONTH LATER , SAYING PART WAS IN. TRIED TO SCHEDULE REPAIR, AND WAS TOLD I HAD TO LEAVE MY BIKE FOR DAYS (PLURAL) FOR A REPAIR THAT IS SUPPOSED TO TAKE ONE HOUR. I INSISTED I WAS NOT GOING TO LEAVE MY BIKE FOR MORE THAN 8 HOURS, FOR SUCH A REPAIR, AND WAS TOLD BY "[XXX]" AT ARCHIES CYCLE NEW BEDFORD, MA "WE DON'T DO DRIVE UP SERVICE." I CALLED THEIR OFFICE AND COMPLAIN…

VEHICLE SPEEDOMETER ERROR EXCEEDS 10%. THIS IS APPARENTLY BY DESIGN AND COMMONLY REPORTED BY OWNERS SINCE 2008. AN AFTERMARKET PLUG-IN ACCESSORY IS REQUIRED TO GET THE RPM DERIVED SPEED OR DISTANCE TO READ OUT CORRECTLY. IN THE STOCK CONFIGURATION THE OWNER IS GOING FAR BELOW THE INDICATED SPEED AND SUBJECT TO BEING RUN INTO OR EMERGENCY PASSED BY VEHICLES APPROACHING FROM THE REAR. *TR

AFTER REFUELING AT A GAS STATION ON MY WAY BACK FROM WORK I MERGED ONTO THE FREEWAY AND NOTICED MY SPEEDOMETER WAS TELLING ME THAT I WAS GOING 125MPH. I WAS RIDDING WITH A FRIEND THAT CAN VERIFY THAT I WAS INDEED NOT GOING ANYWHERE NEAR THE 65MPH SPEED LIMIT. I ALSO REALIZED THAT MY ODOMETER WAS COUNTING AS THOUGH I WAS GOING 125MPH SO THAT MY 15 MILE TRIP ENDED UP BEING A 45 MILE TRIP ACCORDING TO THE ODOMETER. I HAVE MAINTAINED MY BIKE ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURERS RECOMMENDATIONS AND HAVE NOT MODIFIED MY MOTORCYCLE IN ANY WAY.

ONE MONTH AGO, I HIT A SMALL DEER ON MY MOTORCYCLE THAT JUMPED OUT OF THE BUSHES AND GAVE ME NO TIME TO REACT. IT WAS AN UNAVOIDABLE ACCIDENT. AT THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT I DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING WAS BROKEN BECAUSE I WAS ABLE TO PULL MY ARM FORWARD ON MY OWN WITHOUT MUCH PAIN. I DIDN'T NEED AN AMBULANCE AND THOUGHT I HAD MAYBE PULLED A MUSCLE, BUT I WAS WRONG. WHEN I SEPARATED FROM THE MOTORCYCLE, MY LEFT ELBOW GOT CAUGHT ON THE RIGHT MIRROR AND DISLOCATED MY ARM CAUSING A FRACTURED GLENOID, TORN LABRUM AND BICEP TENDON THAT REQUIRED A SURGERY T…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
