RECALL #98V-178 REPLACES THE RADIATOR CAP BECAUSE THE COOLING SYSTEM IS NOT ROBUST ENOUGH TO HOLD THE PRESSURE OF AN OVERHEATED ENGINE. BMW STATES THAT THE RESULT CAN BE A RUPTURED HEATER CORE AND POSSIBLE HOT COOLAND EXPELLED ON THE DRIVERS LEGS AND STEAMED WINDOWS OBSCURING VISION. ALL OF THESE CONDITIONS DO OCCUR AND DID OCCUR ON MY CAR BEFORE THE RECALL. THE REPLACEMENT OF THE HEATER CORE COST IS ABOUT $2,000. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT BMW SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPAIR OF AN ADMITTED DEFECT AND THE REPLACEMENT OF A $10.00 RADIATOR CAP IS NOT …

THIS MUSTARD COLORED MODULE CAUSES THE COMPUTER TO WARN THE DRIVER OF A FAILED PARKING LIGHT AND/OR TAIL LIGHT WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS ARE TURNED ON. EVERY TIME THESE LIGHTS ARE TURNED ON, THIS MODULE SENDS A SIGNAL TO THE DRIVER. UPON INSPECTING THE LIGHTS WHEN THIS WARNING OCCURS, THE LIGHTS ARE FULLY FUNCTIONAL. HOWEVER, ABOUT ONE THIRD OF THE TIME THESE LIGHTS (THE FRONT LEFT PARKING LIGHT, THE REAR LEFT PARKING LIGHT, AND THE RIGHT REAR MARKER LIGHT IN THE BUMPER) ACTAULLY FAIL. THESE LIGHTS FAIL EVEN THOUGH THEIR FILLAMENTS ARE STILL GOOD…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
