Safety Hazard: Oil Pump Failure Leading to Sudden Engine Stall (BMW B58TU engines) Description of Defect: The oil pump module in the 2020 BMW M340i (G20) contains internal plastic components that are prone to thermal degradation and premature failure. These plastic parts can crack or disintegrate, causing a sudden loss of oil pressure. Increasing wear on internal engine components and even leading to irreversible engine damage. Safety Risk: A failure of the oil pump leads to insufficient lubrication of critical engine components, which can r…

Owner report 11611038 · 2024-08-26 (August 26, 2024)

Starter went bad which lead to shortage within the lithium ion battery and regular battery. Car came to a stop and did not move in an intersection, blocking both lanes of traffic. Furthermore, car could not be put into neutral as it could not be started. There was smoke emanating from the engine on further restart attempts. Car had to be towed where it was determine this was the problem. Warning message during re-start "engine overheated" though temperate guage suggested it was still cold.

The starter malfunctioned causing electrical damage to the motor and related components. Although there is literature that exists that this is a potential problem for this vehichle, BMW refuses to fix the problem and is asking me to pay. My warranty is expired by 4 months, but I have only 37,800 miles. The fact that there are 105K vehicles with this potential problem is evidence that this problem exists. Oil measurement fails at 20%, unable to tell how much oil is in engine, can lead to severe engine damage where the engine seizes and you loose power brakes and steering. Dealer says only fix is oil pump replacement.

My vehicle doesn’t read the oil level since the fuel pump that BMW used to manufacture the car is made out of plastic material. There has been hundred of complaints about the same issue with the oil pump not working properly due to the fact that BMW used plastic instead of metal etc. I would like for the NHTSA to take a look at this issue and please consider making it a recall for the users that are having this “Oil Pump” issue please thank you.

The engine oil pump has failed. The part is available for inspection. The failed oil pump causes the engine to blow up, leaving oil and coolant behind on the road as hazards and causing our vehicle violently spin out on the road. The problem has been reproduced multiple times and claimed by bmw dealerships to be faulty on multiple occasions. Upon further research, it has affected 80% of the 2019 and 2020 g series chassis vehicles with the B58tu engine. BMW has a known problem of failed oil pump. As has my own 2020 bmw m340i. At approximately 20,000 miles, vehicle indicated excessively low oil. The dealer indicated oil level was excessively low but did not identify the problem,. The vehicle was filled and returned to owner. Within 1000 miles, the incident occurred again. Dealer replaced replaced the valve cover claiming that was the issue. Now within +/- 1000 miles, the oil level is again excessively low. I happen to have another identical BMW of the same year and same mileage having exactly the same problem (filing separate complaint).

Here’s a strong version that sounds frustrated but still credible and harder to dismiss: I’ve owned many vehicles over the years, and this BMW has been, without question, the most problematic car I’ve ever had. The list of issues has been absurd for a vehicle in this price range and from a brand that markets itself as a premium luxury manufacturer. The sunroof failed, I’ve had multiple tire blowouts under normal driving conditions, the drive bar/suspension was bent from what should have been a routine road bump, the engine oil housing/compone…

The starter in my 2022 BMW M340I sedan was faulty after 54,000 miles. It began to take two attempts to start the vehicle each time and was at risk of not starting. The first attempt all electrical components would turn on but the ignition was unable to start the engine. Then the second attempt was generally successful. I took it to the dealer and had to replace my starter to return the vehicle to normal operation. BMW has recalled tens of thousands of other starters including my model but not yet for the 2022 BMW M340i I was told.

While driving through an intersection and making a left turn, a failure of the engine water pump pulley caused the pulley to break apart. This led to damage to the coolant line and tensioner, sudden coolant loss, and the serpentine belt slipping off. Oil pump appears to have failed. Told plastic components inside pump. BMW issued a new part number and changed pump to all metal internals. This is standard on later production dates now. Pump failure causes engine failure and oil gauge failure to read out. Head gasket replacement which may or may not be related.

Started as low creaking noise coming from front left wheel. Slow speeds, over small bumps. Over time (one month), creaking noises became louder and more frequent. At that time, steering was starting to feel stiff when turning to the left. Taken to 2 BMW dealerships who said it was just a noise and that both tie rods would have to be replaced. Upon further investigation, these noises and handling are a result of the torque being too tight at the factory upon manufacturer.

Oil pump manufacturing fault. One of the internal components on the oil pump for these B58 engines contains a ring that is made of plastic. Due to its the nature of this type of material, when it is heated and cooled, over time it becomes brittle and cracks. Under heavy acceleration, the oil pressure will go over 90psi. My car needs the oil pump to be replaced.

Hi. I’d like to point out I have not had an incident YET thankfully. However, I want to highlight that the early M340i production releases (2019 and 2020) are HIGHLY likely to experience catastrophic engine failure due to an oil pump being made of plastic on some models. Of the 20 or so complaints listed under this vehicle on NHTSA, I’ve already seen PLENTY of complaints regarding this issue and people actually experiencing this issue. I believe if a car has a fair chance of causing catastrophic damage to its engine on its own, it poses as a sa…
