Owner report 11477900 · 2022-08-06 (August 6, 2022)

Bolts holding brake caliper assembly to the axle apparently loosen and fell out while on the highway. This caused the caliper to drop, resting on inner part of the tire rim, leaving approximately half to one quarter of the caliper on the disc. Caliper caused significant gouging on the rim. During braking, the caliper was prevented from spinning during brake application due to it hitting the axle u-bolt retention plate on top of the leaf spring. In the very limited backing, the hydraulic line held back the caliper. Safety issues are the comple…

This is an updated report with additional detail. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused. * Baggage door routinely open while travelling. A number of items may have been sucked out of the RV while moving down the road. We try to be hypervigilant and pull over as soon as we notice the door flapping open, and we secure loose items in drawers. * RV doors routinely open. The front door always opens, even though we use the 'deadbolt'. It's usually held in place by a hand rail that folds over the door, but this occassionally comes open, as wel…

Owner report 11590944 · 2024-05-28 (May 28, 2024)

We are victims of frame failure. First sign was a creaky floor in the bedroom. Screws worked their way out of the wood flooring and pushed up underneath the linoleum. The movement of the nose cap pushed screws out of the trim and seal piece on the underside of the front cap. We reseated screws, upgraded screws, resealed this at least 5 times and now use gorilla tape to avoid water intrusion. The underbelly has fallen down while traveling so we had to reinforce this ourselves. Our driver side bay door will fly open when traveling. It locks but t…

The contact owns a 2021 Grand Design Recreational Momentum. The contact stated that while having maintenance work completed on the RV, the dealer removed the nose cap and noticed that the insulation and the mylar tarp near the rear of the RV was burned. The contact was informed that the wiring on the nose cap had been overheating and causing the burn. The dealer had reconnected the wiring but had not repaired the RV. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 40,000.

Our new 2024 Momentum 414M suffered a landing gear failure - while returning to hitch height the passenger side landing gear cylinder housing broke, causing the camper to fall to it's belly. Upon further research, Grand Design has had issues with frames flexing. Also - the hydraulic cylinder mfg has a gen 2 model that has reinforcement where ours failed. This is a 43 foot fifth wheel RV. The frame near the front of the RV is showing signs of "frame-flex," or frame cracking. The attached pictures illustrate where the walls are shifting and creating wear marks; this is consistent with other RV owners experiences the same problem. This issue could contribute in further frame cracking that may result in significant property damage or even death. I plan to report this issue today to the manufacturer, Grand Design.

The contact stated that the failure was visible over the axles. In addition, the welding on the cross-member beams was fractured, causing the floor to crack, and the exterior fiberglass was cracked by the bedroom slide-out. Additionally, there was a four-inch-long crack on the frame of the upper deck. Most recently, the contact found movement of the cabinets in the upper…

My Grand Design Momentum fifth wheel trailer is experiencing frame flex and structural integrity failure. The unit has developed spider cracking in the exterior fiberglass, interior wall separation, and plumbing issues believed to be caused by frame flex. The dealership has acknowledged structural concerns and installed lag bolts, but the underlying structural defect remains. Grand Design has denied that the frame flex caused the structural damage. This creates a serious safety risk while towing, including potential structural failure. I b…

Approximately 4 hours after dropping the trailer off the dealer called and said that the technician found significant frame flex and that the unit was unsafe to be towed. Upon returning from a recent trip I discovered that the passenger side rear leaf spring had snapped in to, near the rear leaf spring hanger. The equalizer also had cracked welds because of the incident. Thankfully the front of the leaf spring was still attached. This RV issue may be related to the widely documented frame flex issue. 1) The RV is at home in my storage shed. 2) Our safety and other motorists were put at risks because if the axle would have completely detached from the frame, it could have caused a catastrophic accident. …

It is a common issue with the Grand Design Momentum G-class travel trailers where the interior floor and possibly the frame are flexing so much that is causes the laminate flooring to lift and separate from the plywood underneath. Bubbles in my laminate flooring were found during our initial walk through when our trailer was purchased, I was lead to believe that it was just a simple adhesive issue, but have since found from research that this is a common issue with all the g-class trailers.
