Recall history

6 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

92V011000 · Electrical System:12v/24v/48v Battery:Cables

Reported: 1992-01-22 (January 22, 1992) · Model years: 1988, 1989, 1990

THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE CAN CHAFE BECAUSE OF ITS PROXIMITY TO THE OIL TANK, CAUSING A SHORT CIRCUIT IF THE CABLE SHOULD GROUND.

Consequence: THE HEAT FROM A SHORT CIRCUIT COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLEFIRE.

Remedy: REPLACE THE POSTIVE BATTERY CABLE.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
92V125000 · Electrical System:12v/24v/48v Battery:Cables

Reported: 1992-09-04 (September 4, 1992) · Model years: 1989, 1990

THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLES INSTALLED AS PART OF HARLEY- DAVIDSON'S PREVIOUS RECALL 077 (NHTSA RECALL 92V011000) CAN FAIL IN SERVICE.

Consequence: FAILURE OF THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE RESULTS IN LOSS OFELECTRICAL SYSTEM FUNCTIONS OF IGNITION, LIGHTS, AND ACCESSORIES.

Remedy: INSTALL NEW REPLACEMENT BATTERY CABLES.

92V173000 · Fuel System, Gasoline

Reported: 1992-11-30 (November 30, 1992) · Model years: 1990, 1991

THE FUEL INLET NEEDLE DOES NOT SEAL PROPERLY AGAINST THE FUEL INLET SEAT.

Consequence: THE FUEL OVERFLOW SYSTEM ALLOWS FUEL TO LEAK ONTO THEGROUND, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FIRE IF EXPOSED TO A SOURCE OF IGNITION.

Remedy: REPLACE THE FUEL INLET NEEDLE.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
96V204000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Fuel Injection System

Reported: 1996-10-22 (October 22, 1996) · Model years: 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997

THE EFFECTS OF REFORMULATED GASOLINE ALONG WITH CERTAIN USAGE OF THE FUEL SUPPLY VALVE AFFECTS THE SUPPLY OF GASOLINE TO THE CARBURETOR. THIS CONDITION REQUIRES TWO FACTORS: (1) THE USE OF REFORMULATED FUELS CONTAINING MBTE AND (2) STARTING THE MOTORCYCLE WITH THE FUEL VALVE HANDLE IN THE OFF POSITION.

Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE THE FUEL FLOW TO BE UNPREDICTABLE THUS CAUSING THE ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN INCREASING THE RISK OF A MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT.

Remedy: DEALERS THE REPLACE THE DIAPHRAGM IN THE FUEL VALVE.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
96V103000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic

Reported: 1996-06-14 (June 14, 1996) · Model years: 1996

THE SEAL ON THE REAR MASTER CYLINDER PISTON CAN MOVE OUT OF POSITION.

Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN RESULT IN A LOSS OF REAR BRAKING PERFORMANCE INCREASING THE POTENTIAL FOR A VEHICLE ACCIDENT.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE REAR BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
97V227000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Pedals And Linkages

Reported: 1997-12-15 (December 15, 1997) · Model years: 1998

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTORCYCLES. THE REAR BRAKE PEDAL ASSEMBLY MAY HAVE AN INADEQUATE WELD.

Consequence: THIS CONDITION CAN ALLOW THE LEVER HUB TO SEPARATE FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER LEVER WHICH WOULD AFFECT REAR BRAKE PERFORMANCE.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERFORM THE RECALL SERVICE ON THESE VEHICLES.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
