WHILE HOOKING UP FIFTH WHEEL RV TO TOW VEHICLE VIA ELECTRICAL UMBILICAL CORD A SEVERE SHORT OCCURRED CAUSING EXTENSIVE WIRING DAMAGE INSIDE THE FIFTH WHEEL RV. EVEN THOUGH PLUG AND RECEPTACLE ARE KEYED TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING IT IS ENTIRELY POSSIBLE TO PLUG IT IN INCORRECTLY. WHILE OUTSIDE OF SALT LAKE CITY UTAH ON INTERSTATE 15 WE EXPERIENCED A TREAD SEPARATION ON OUR 2012 KEYSTONE MONTANA 3100RL. THE LEFT REAR TIRE CAME APART. THE TIRE WAS A GOODYEAR MARATHON STS235R 16. THE TIRES WERE MANUFACTURED IN THE 49TH WEEK OF 2011 AND CAME EQUIPPED WITH THE TRAILER WHEN WE BOUGHT IT NEW IN FEBRUARY OF 2012. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH GOODYEAR (COMPLAINT #[XXX]) IN WHICH THEY SAID THEY DETERMINED IT WAS NOT THE RESULT OF A DEFECT WITH THEIR TIRE BUT A RESULT OF A LOSS OF AIR PRESSURE. After a 170 mile trip in roughly 50F temperatures, I pulled into my destination and noticed 1 tire was rounded across the tread instead of flat. After closer inspection it is clear the tread is separating from the tire and the steel belt is visible. The tire was probably only minutes from completely blowing out. TPMS did not indicate any abnormal pressure or temperature for any tires, and the tire looked fine prior to leaving for this trip. This is the second set of Ranier tires that I have had that have blown out unexpectedly

This unit experienced frame flex or frame failure. This frame was constructed by Lippert and has failed causing broken welds, the body to shift and move causing visible stress cracks in the exterior of the body. The interior incident happened in December of 2022 and repairs were attempted in March 2023 only to happen again. This has resulted in the trailer being unsafe to tow and could cause bodily injury to my family and others on the road.

After only about 2000 miles of driving, it was discovered that a main cross member had broken loose from the frame rails. These cross members help maintain the structural integrity of the trailer. Had this problem gone unchecked, it could have resulted in the trailer falling apart on the road. A certified welder has reinforced the connection and pictures have been sent to the manufacturer.

This 5th wheel RV has a damaged chassis such as broken structural welds and bent or twisted and/or cracked frame members. The frame of the trailer is failing under normal use. After owning the trailer only 3 months we found a broken cross member. It was welded and reinforced under the direction of Keystone. 15 months later we now have 2 more broken cross members as well as several broken welds at the front of the trailer. This is now the second Montana 5th wheel that we have owned with this failure in 2 years.

Upon investigating what had happened, found 6 of the 8 lug studs to be snapped off flush or below the outer surface of the drum brake hub assembly. Lug nuts are checked with a torque wrench to 120 ft lbs prior to each trip. Lug nuts had never been found to be loose.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Had this problem gone unchecked, it could have resulted in the trailer falling apart on the road. A certified welder has reinforced the connection and pictures have been sent to the manufacturer.

Had this problem gone unchecked, it could have resulted in the trailer falling apart on the road. A certified welder has reinforced the connection and pictures have been sent to the manufacturer.
