Recall history

4 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

15V441000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Storage:Tank Assembly

Reported: 2015-07-10 (July 10, 2015) · Model years: 2014

KTM North America, Inc. (KTM) is recalling all model year 2014 1290 Super Duke R motorcycles manufactured July 1, 2013, to April 30, 2014. The affected motorcycles may leak fuel from the threaded inserts at the rear of the gas tank.

Consequence: A fuel leak from the threaded inserts, in the presence of an ignition source, may increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy: KTM will notify owners, and dealers will seal the threaded inserts to prevent future fuel leaks. If the motorcycle shows evidence of an existing fuel leak at the threaded insert, the gas tank will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2015. Owners may contact KTM customer service at 1-888-985-6090. KTM's number for this recall is TB1507.

KTM North America, Inc. (KTM) is recalling certain 2015-2016 1290 Super Duke R ABS, 2016 1290 Super Duke R SE ABS and 1290 Super Duke GT ABS and 2017-2018 Super Duke R and1290 Super Duke GT motorcycles. The piston within the Brembo front brake master cylinder may fail.

Consequence: If the front brake master cylinder piston fails, the loss of front braking ability can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: KTM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the piston with an aluminum one, free of charge. The recall began on February 21, 2018. Owner's may contact KTM customer service at 1-888-985-6090.

21V122000 · Electrical System:Wiring

Reported: 2021-02-26 (February 26, 2021) · Model years: 2020

KTM North America, Inc. (KTM) is recalling certain 2020 1290 Super Duke R motorcycles. The wiring harness located in the rear of the motorcycle may be routed incorrectly, which could result in wiring damage and an electrical short-circuit.

Consequence: An electrical short-circuit could cause the engine to stall, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Remedy: KTM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear wiring harness, and repair as necessary. In addition, dealers will modify a piece of the bodywork called the "tail end lower part" to correct the routing of the wiring harness and add wiring protection and cable ties. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began March 24, 2021. KTM's number for this recall is TB2104.

Consequence: An engine stall can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect and repair the main wiring harness installation, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 26, 2023. Owners may contact KTM customer service at 1-888-985-6090. KTM's number for this recall is KTB2211.

FRONT WHEEL CAN (AND DID) LOCK UP IN PARKING LOT MANEUVERS AND CAUSE A TIP OVER (I SAVED IT). I BELIEVE THE CAUSE IS A MFG DEFECT WITH TOLERANCES FOR FRONT RIM AND CAUSES ROTORS TO WARP. HAS HAPPENED SINCE NEW AND CAN BE CONFIRMED BY PUSHING THE BIKE AROUND (UNMOUNTED) AND YOU CAN FEEL THE RUBBING / NOISE. Coolant radiator failed due to what appears to be a stress fracture in the component. The fracture in the radiator allowed coolant to spray onto the operator and onto the vehicle. At the current time, the part is available for inspection. The coolant which was allowed to spray from the radiator can potentially burn the operator of the vehicle. The coolant which was allowed to spray from the radiator can also potentially cause the vehicle to crash if it were to spray on the tires, as the coolant is a slippery substance and can reduce or remove f…

MY FRONT BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER COMPLETELY LOST PRESSURE AND THE ABILITY TO SLOW DOWN THE MOTORCYCLE. I AM FORTUNATE THAT IT DID NOT CAUSE ME TO CRASH. THE BRAKE SYSTEM IS MANUFACTURED BY BREMBO. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE THE SAME MANUFACTURER DEFECT THAT AFFECTED THE 2015 AND 2016 KTM 1290 SUPERDUKE R MOTORCYCLES, WHICH HAVE AN OPEN RECALL ON THE SAME BREMBO MASTER CYLINDER. I AM NOT SURE WHY THE 2014 WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.

THIS FAULT HAS OCCURRED TWICE WITHIN 220 MILES (2 WEEKS). WHILE RIDING THE MOTORCYCLE AND ENTERING A CORNER (IN MOTION), THE DASH SHOWED THE ALERT OF "MTC FAILURE". THIS FAILURE NOT ONLY CAUSED THE BIKE TO BECOME UNSETTLED/UNSTABLE, BUT UPON TURNING THE THROTTLE TO ACCELERATE OUT OF THE CORNER, I DISCOVERED THAT IT COMPLETELY STOPPED ALL PROPULSION TO THE REAR WHEEL. THE MTC FAILURE STOPS THE POWER DELIVERY TO THE BACK WHEEL ALTOGETHER, MAKING THE BIKE UNSTABLE AND UNABLE TO BE CONTROLLED THROUGH ACCELERATION (THE VERY THING THAT NEEDED FOR STA…

The shifting mechanism components became loose, and it hindered me from shifting up - it would upshift with difficulty, then it would go from 1st gear to neutral, making for a very dangerous experience. It quickly degraded and I could not shift out of 1st gear at all.

- Radiator has started to leak from the tops of both corners near the mounting. There is also a noticeable bend in the radiator causing the middle to sag. Inspection allowed on request. - My safety is put at risk because the coolant can leak onto the rear brake reducing stopping distance. It also can leak onto the rear tire reducing grip endangering my life and others on the road. It will also leak onto the ground possibly causing me to lose traction with my feet as well as others to lose their traction and risk dropping their bikes on themsel…
