SHORTLY AFTER I PURCHASED THIS BIKE NEW, THE FRONT BRAKES WOULD "GROAN" AS YOU WHEELED THE BIKE AROUND AS IF THE BRAKE PADS WERE NOT RETRACTING / PISTONS STICKING. THERE WOULD ALSO BE A LOW SPEED PULSING TO THE BRAKES AS IF THE ROTOR WAS WARPED (WHICH HAS NEVER HAPPENED TO ME IN DECADES OF RIDING). THIS CONTINUED TO GET WORSE UNTIL THE ROTORS WERE DEFINITELY WARPED. MY FRONT BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER COMPLETELY LOST PRESSURE AND THE ABILITY TO SLOW DOWN THE MOTORCYCLE. I AM FORTUNATE THAT IT DID NOT CAUSE ME TO CRASH. THE BRAKE SYSTEM IS MANUFACTURED BY BREMBO. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE THE SAME MANUFACTURER DEFECT THAT AFFECTED THE 2015 AND 2016 KTM 1290 SUPERDUKE R MOTORCYCLES, WHICH HAVE AN OPEN RECALL ON THE SAME BREMBO MASTER CYLINDER. I AM NOT SURE WHY THE 2014 WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

Recall history

1 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

15V441000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Storage:Tank Assembly

Reported: 2015-07-10 (July 10, 2015)

KTM North America, Inc. (KTM) is recalling all model year 2014 1290 Super Duke R motorcycles manufactured July 1, 2013, to April 30, 2014. The affected motorcycles may leak fuel from the threaded inserts at the rear of the gas tank.

Consequence: A fuel leak from the threaded inserts, in the presence of an ignition source, may increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy: KTM will notify owners, and dealers will seal the threaded inserts to prevent future fuel leaks. If the motorcycle shows evidence of an existing fuel leak at the threaded insert, the gas tank will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 11, 2015. Owners may contact KTM customer service at 1-888-985-6090. KTM's number for this recall is TB1507.

FRONT BRAKES ARE INCONSISTENT / GRABBY AT SLOW SPEEDS. <10MPH THEY MAKE A RUBBING NOISE/FEEL AND THE LEVER IS ON/OFF IN LIEU OF PROGRESSIVE AS YOU'D EXPECT. FRONT WHEEL CAN (AND DID) LOCK UP IN PARKING LOT MANEUVERS AND CAUSE A TIP OVER (I SAVED IT). I BELIEVE THE CAUSE IS A MFG DEFECT WITH TOLERANCES FOR FRONT RIM AND CAUSES ROTORS TO WARP. HAS HAPPENED SINCE NEW AND CAN BE CONFIRMED BY PUSHING THE BIKE AROUND (UNMOUNTED) AND YOU CAN FEEL THE RUBBING / NOISE. Coolant radiator failed due to what appears to be a stress fracture in the component. The fracture in the radiator allowed coolant to spray onto the operator and onto the vehicle. At the current time, the part is available for inspection. The coolant which was allowed to spray from the radiator can potentially burn the operator of the vehicle. The coolant which was allowed to spray from the radiator can also potentially cause the vehicle to crash if it were to spray on the tires, as the coolant is a slippery substance and can reduce or remove f…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
