Since the latest OVER THE AIR software update (3.3.18) the backup camera fails to work properly when shifted into reverse well over 50% of the time. When the camera fails, I only see a warming message that indicates "camera is temporarily unavailable" The car already has poor rearward visibility, due to a very small rear window and small exterior mirrors.

Vehicle Info: 2021 Polestar 2 74,765 mi Software version 5.0.10 About 2 weeks ago, I updated to the newest OTA update 5.0.10, which may be unrelated. 1 week ago, the normal start-up safety procedure flagged the airbag and instructed me to find a service station immediately. I scheduled an appt and I was charged $300 diagnostic fee. It's unclear if the airbags would deploy in a collision based on the fault. Owner report 11673106 · 2025-07-13 (July 13, 2025)

Reverse camera does not come on sometimes. When it does come on it can take anywhere from 5- 30 seconds to finally come on. When lane keep assist is activated the car will randomly yank the steering wheel to the right and pull me out of my lane, even with my hands on the wheel. It’s incredibly dangerous.

Owner report 11689180 · 2025-09-23 (September 23, 2025)

When vehicle is behind driven, and adaptive cruise and steering assist are active the vehicle regularly falsely interprets road lines. When this happens the vehicle veers quickly. This has happened multiple times veering the vehicle into oncoming traffic, off the road, or onto the shoulder. It can be corrected by driver intervention but the car maneuvers quickly when falsely reading road signs

The backup camera system frequently malfunctions when in use. The image may flicker black, freeze, or delay longer than 2 seconds after switching to reverse. On some occasions the camera shows as completely unavailable. It happens nearly every day, nearly every drive. As a federally mandated safety device with very specific operating parameters I do believe this component is non-compliant and has become a persistent issue for me and other owners.

Upon putting the vehicle into reverse, the backup camera takes an insurmountably long time to engage and when it does, the image it produces frequently flashes for several seconds before stabilizing, rendering it useless - particularly with pedestrians or vehicles behind the car. Recent OTA updates have exacerbated this problem, which poses a pretty severe safety risk in a car with such limited rear visibility, and after researching the problem online, it's pretty clear that it's an endemic issue to the car and can likely be remedied through so…

Backup camera regularly fails to respond in time when powering on the car. Sometimes takes numerous times to enter in and out of reverse. Sometimes the rear view backup camera reverts to overhead 360 camera view without intervention, making it difficult to see in the rear. Polestar has made updates to the software via OTA updates that have tried to address this by reducing memory use during car boot up, but it’s very clear that the head units in polestar 2s up until at least my model year MY24 are severely underpowered and unable to properly sw…

Backup camera often turns off and on 3 to 6 times when backing up after first starting the car. If can be off for 5 to 20 seconds when it flashes off and it all happens within a 2min window. The parking camera system freezes and flickers on a fresh startup on a fairly consistent basis, all you have to do is let the car go into a "sleep state" then enter the car and go in to reverse. Also, there are false positives from the parking collision system in the rear when going down a sidewalk apron, causing the emergency braking system to trigger. Polestar has issued several software updates over the past year that have resulted in serious safety issues: A previous software recall for issues with the vehicle's backup camera has not fixed the issue. About 50% of the time, the vehicles backup camera flashes, freezes, and then fails while reversing before eventually displaying a "Backup Camera Not Available" message. The issue is that this all happens while reversing in motion, meaning it's distracting and dangerous. Similarly, the vehicle's automatic emergency rear braking engages errone…

The car's rear camera freezes up for a few second and then blacks out intermittently. An error code even appears, "Camera is temporarily unavailable." I am terrified that one of my kids (or someone else) is going to run behind the car and I won't realize it because the camera is frozen. I know other owners are experiencing this, too, and it's only a matter of time until it kills someone.

There are two major mechanical problems: 1. The backup camera is unreliable and dangerous. It flickers horribly while in use, often blacking out for multiple seconds at a time. 2. The automatic braking feature is overly sensitive and occasionally slams the brakes when you're trying to park, making you think you've hit something. I've asked Polestar to fix both of these issues, or to at least disable the automatic braking. No luck.

When engaging reverse, the rear view camera feed either cuts out intermittently or never turns on. Without it there is also no way to have a visual indication of incoming rear cross traffic while reversing. This issue happens daily and makes it very dangerous to reverse due to the limited visibility through the small rear window of the vehicle. Often when the camera DOES work, the video feed may freeze or be laggy which causes a false sense of safety when relying on it for visibility. The vehicle’s rear view camera continues to be unstable, even after the recent NHTSA-mandated software recall was installed. This recall DID NOT fix the issue. Ultimately, the vehicle’s computer hardware is underpowered and cannot run the latest software versions sufficiently, and that is the root of the flickering and crashing that occurs. Besides the rear view camera cutting out and saying “temporarily unavailable” the car’s automatic emergency braking system often mistakenly slams on the brakes, and because it’s controlled through the rear c…

This has happened often enough to the point where I disable the emergency braking system on every startup.

I have attached a still from a video of what this looks lik…
