25V280000 · Back Over Prevention:Software
Reported: 2025-04-25 (April 25, 2025)
Polestar Automotive USA, Inc. (Polestar) is recalling certain 2021-2025 Polestar 2 vehicles. The rearview camera image may not display when the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
Consequence: A rearview camera image that does not display reduces the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Dealers will update the vehicle software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 20, 2025. Owners may contact Polestar's customer service at 1-800-806-2504. Polestar's number for this recall is RP1056. Vehicles in this recall that were previously repaired under 24V-477 will need to have the new remedy completed.

The image may flicker black, freeze, or delay longer than 2 seconds after switching to reverse. On some occasions the camera shows as completely unavailable. It happens nearly every day, nearly every drive. As a federally mandated safety device with very specific operating parameters I do believe this component is non-compliant and has become a persistent issue for me and other owners. | 19764.6%ODI 11587063The reverse camera functions intermittently, and frequently flickers or does not display an image. | 8169.8%ODI 11586906Upon putting the vehicle into reverse, the backup camera takes an insurmountably long time to engage and when it does, the image it produces frequently flashes for several seconds before stabilizing, rendering it useless - particularly with pedestrians or vehicles behind the car. Recent OTA updates have exacerbated this problem, which poses a pretty severe safety risk in a car with such limited rear visibility, and after researching the problem online, it's pretty clear that it's an endemic issue to the car and can likely be remedied through so… | 833.3%ODI 11647077Backup camera regularly fails to respond in time when powering on the car. Sometimes takes numerous times to enter in and out of reverse. Sometimes the rear view backup camera reverts to overhead 360 camera view without intervention, making it difficult to see in the rear. Polestar has made updates to the software via OTA updates that have tried to address this by reducing memory use during car boot up, but it’s very clear that the head units in polestar 2s up until at least my model year MY24 are severely underpowered and unable to properly sw… | 1100.0%ODI 11684990See attached document for complaint. If can be off for 5 to 20 seconds when it flashes off and it all happens within a 2min window. It makes it very dangerous when backing up. This is not a new issue as I’ve had it for over a year and has been reported by others on forum websites for the car. It seem related to the infortainment system fully as the screen is shared with it. | 312.5%ODI 11659531Backup camera will periodically go blank and not work. The camera will also sometimes switch to 360 camera mode unpredictably. Polestar does have a documented recall for this camera not functioning correctly. Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.
This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.
No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
