Owner report 11570742 · 2024-02-08 (February 8, 2024)

I purchased the car in the middle of September 2023. Within a week of owning I noticed that there was a clicking sound under the steering wheel when I started to turn to the RIGHT from a stop. Several weeks later the clicking sound began when I made a turn to the LEFT from a stop as well. It happened all the time and gradually became louder. When I took the car in for the 5000 mile service and reported the sound, I was told that Toyota was going to change both front axles. The service manager could not tell me what the problem with the car was …

Toyota has issued a STOP SALE and RECALL on the airbags in this vehicle. There is no anticipated time for resolution but rumors indicate it might be October. During this time the airbags would not deploy if you are driving with the front windows down as it affects both driver and passenger side. We bought this car with the expectation of quality and my confidence is not high given Toyota has also issued recalls on engines in the Tundra. I have contacted Toyota Customer Care, a case was created and I was directed to the dealership for any ad…

Check axel joint problems. Every time the car turns either way there is a loud clicking sound. This could be a big problem because it is a steering system. It has been confirmed by the dealership and part are on order. They said it is not a safety issue but I feel the steering and axle is a big component and if it fails it could result in damage of property or life. This has not been inspected by the police or insurance only the dealership confirmed it. There are also many others with this type of vehicle having this problem. There were no warn…

In the middle where the car chargers are – the one in the center isn’t working but the one to the right is. When doing maps, the visual map disappeared and just showed where to turn – happened about 2-3 time. Today the entire screen went black – no radio, phone, maps, nothing. No way to operate it at all. This is unrelated to the current recall that addresses the speedometer / display right behind the steering wheel.

I own a 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid and am experiencing an intermittent knocking/clicking noise that appears to come from the drivetrain area. The noise occurs most often during low-speed driving and while turning left or right, particularly on the first drive of the day after the vehicle has been sitting overnight, but it has also occurred at other times while driving. The condition is intermittent and does not occur every trip, however it has been heard by multiple drivers. The noise is most noticeable during light acceleration combin…

I purchased this vehicle in Canada and I need to use this vehicle in United States roads as well. Toyota is reluctant to confirm this vehicle is meeting Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards except labelling and it is safe to drive in United States roads. This vehicle is equipped with TPMS but it is not listed as a part present in the vehicle which makes me worry. Request you to probe this requirement and make me and my loved ones feel safe in driving this vehicle.

The Panoramic Roof Glass shattered on its own while driving on the freeway, there were no overpasses, no trees, no semi-trucks, no other vehicle in front of me while i was driving. The shattered glass pieces fell on my children in the back seats luckily there were no injuries as we closed the screen immediately.

I recently purchased a Toyota Grand Highlander just two days ago, and I’m experiencing a serious issue that is affecting my ability to drive the vehicle safely. At speeds between 25–40 mph, there is a significant cabin boom and echo inside the vehicle. This creates a pressure sensation in my ears, causing nausea, disorientation, and physical discomfort. I’ve only driven about 50 miles, and the symptoms are severe enough that I cannot continue driving the vehicle.

Very loud Popping/clicking noises when turning/accelerating from a stop. Only had 2,162 miles on the vehicle when this happened. While driving, it also felt like my front driver side wheel was wobbling-very unsafe. Called Toyota roadside assistance and had car towed to dealership. Lead service technician was able to reproduce the popping and clicking noise. Dealership opened a case with Toyota, and had engineers come look. 10 days later, they called to tell me that they have to replace CV axle. Car was in the shop 18 days total. This problem sh…

After starting the vehicle and coming to a conplete stop the vehicle will hesitate upon new acceleration. The hesitation causes a lag in the vehicle and it then will jerk or jolt while shifting. The vehicle will Rev up in a low gear and not shift correctly. This causes a safety issue especially when going into traffic. I have not taken it to the dealer as of yet, but I will be. This is an intermittent issue, so i fear toyota will say they cannot replicate the issue. There were no warning lamps when the event happens.

Our vehicle loses power after initial startup when you first accelerate. If you go to the grand Highlander forum every driver is reporting the exact same issue over the last three months that the car has been out Toyota has put out a statement but has no solution, it is a hybrid and it’s supposed to get 400 miles or more per tank and we have to fill it up every time we drive only 170 miles. Fuel fill-ups averaging 13-14 gallons when vehicle trip computer alerts 0 miles remaining distance to empty. Fuel tank capacity published as 17.8 gallons. Total vehicle range understated, requiring more frequent stops at gas stations to fill. Not a direct safety concern, but a significant nuisance and dealer has stated this is normal and there is no fix for this issue. EPA estimated MPG 26-27, should equate to approximately 460+ miles/tank. Instead experiencing approximately 350-365 miles per full tank of fuel.

When going over rough or uneven roads, the car produces a strong low-frequency resonance, like a bass-heavy "boom". This causes a very uncomfortable feeling of pressure changing in my ears, gives me a headache and ear pain whenever I drive in local roads, which is the majority of driving in my area. This causes me to need to pull over and stop the car frequently to readjust my hearing. I've found many reports from others of the same issue but Toyota have not acknowledged it or found a solution.

We were going down the highway in our brand new Grand Highlander yesterday (3500 miles, 3 months old) and it was like a bomb had gone off. The panoramic sunroof exploded up and out. Glass started falling on my daughter whom was in the middle seat. My husband had to quickly pull off the highway to safety. I have never experienced anything like this and it was extremely scary. Obviously there is a defect that needs to be addressed.

Missing the wire connector for the puddle lamp installation? although not a safety issue, would like to bring this to attention; wire connectors (and wires) missing on both driver and passenger doors? Not sure if this was a factory oversight, or an error in original wiring diagram of Toyota? If so, there could be other wires missing in the vehicle as well. Hopefully Toyota will look into this and propose a fix for their customers. Thank you

Since December 18, 2024 I have had this happen 5 times. I come to a complete stop and have my foot on the brake. The car will then hop four-five times (like the sensation of shifting in manual with a cluch and you don’t shift correctly and the car will hop). I am not sure why this is happening. I took it to the dealer and they haven’t experienced the issue. This doesn’t happen at every full stop either.

Toyota T-SB-0082-24 / Rotational Clicking Noise From Front Drive Shaft Assembly ( CV JOINT) CV joint defect poses an unreasonable risk to safety, especially if it fails while you are driving. An unreasonable risk is one where the potential for harm is much greater than the potential benefit of taking the risk. After waiting for a an appropriate gap in traffic, I attempted to accelerate though the interesting. I released the brake pedal and attempted to accelerate. The vehicle barely accelerated. The engine seemed to minimally climb in RPM and only accelerated minimally out into the cross road. This lasted approximately 1-2 seconds. AT this point I was fully into the first lane of traffic. I then fully depress…

When ambient temperature are over ~90 the vehicle will lose power during acceleration. This happens typically in the speed range of ~20-35mph. The vehicle’s rpm will spike high but lose the ability to increase speed or shift gears. This occurs ~ 40-50% of the time when over 90 degrees. On several occasions we were forced to abandon merging onto the highway because the vehicle wasn’t safely able to accelerate to match the speed of vehicles on the highway. We reported this issue to our local Toyota dealer September 2025. After reviewing the vehic…

My vehicle has a recurrent issue with failing front axle assemblies. The vehicle experienced rotational clicking and had both from axle assemblies replaced around 20,000 miles. Around 40,000 miles the clicking returned and toyota has refused to replace the failing axles again. I currently am at 63,000 miles and I won an arbitration case regarding the axles. I have a 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander (FWD Gas) with about 37,000 miles and had 2 wheel bearings fail - front right and rear right. I noticed a constant humming noise starting around 20-25 mph that increased with vehicle speed. Thinking it was tire noise, I replaced all 4 tires, and the sound was still present. The dealership first replaced the right front bearing, and when they drove it after the repair, they noticed the sound decreased but did not eliminate the noise, and they further diagnosed a failed rear wheel bearing.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

No selected model years have a complete observation window. Choose an eligible year or a shorter window.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.

Sometimes the radio lose volume all the way. You could turn the volume all the way up , change stations, FM, Sirius and nothing happens. The only way that this issue goes away and you can go back and start listening is to turn off completely the vehicle, leave if off, for a few secs, then power on . turn on the vehicle. After shutting engine off, there is a gasoline smell coming from the vehicle. This repeatedly happens. I took the vehicle to the dealer who did a variety of tests but could not diagnose or fix the cause. The result is I cannot safely park the vehicle in my garage. I have requested that the complaint be sent to Toyota on January 15. No response or acknowledgment as yet.

Intermittently, my vehicle will hesitate to accelerate or will move only marginally (disproportionately to the depressing of the gas pedal) from a complete stop. When it occurs, it often does so for a number of seconds. This has been incredibly dangerous given I live off a busy street and I cannot trust that when I press the gas pedal to accelerate to turn onto the street, that my vehicle will be caught in oncoming traffic and hit.

Shortly after starting my vehicle and driving out of my neighborhood, there are a series of stop signs. The roadway is at a slight incline. When attempting to press the gas pedal after stopping at the first stop sign, my vehicle hesitates or does not accelerate. This lasts anywhere from 1-5 seconds. This occasionally also occurs again at the second stop sign a few hundred yards later as well. The best I can describe this is as an unresponsive gas pedal or limp mode. I cannot stress how incredibly dangerous this issue is. Someone is going to…

I reside in the Phoenix, AZ area where high temperatures have been ranging around 110-115. - This poses a safety risk when attempting to pull out onto a busy road, either turning left or right. If the gas pedal fails to respond, this could lead to a serious crash. - This issue has arisen following a recent software update…

Starting off from a stop or at low speeds the vehicle loses all power. Engine stumbles and does not respond, when it happens it almost feels like the engine may stall. Pressing the accelerator and the vehicle will not move, then suddenly will start to go seconds later. This has almost resulted in a crash since the vehicle loses all propulsion unexpectedly. No warning lights. Took to the dealer twice and everything is “normal” no codes stored.

**Vehicle:** Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Max **Issue:** On high-temperature days, when the A/C is running at full capacity, the vehicle occasionally fails to accelerate from a stop. This issue persists even after applying the recommended ECM update. **Safety Concern:** The lack of reliable acceleration poses a significant safety risk, particularly when turning across oncoming traffic or entering a busy street. This situation can leave the vehicle stalled in the path of approaching vehicles, increasing the likelihood of an accident. **Acti…

The car stalls or fails to accelerate from a complete stop despite adequately stepping on the gas pedal. This has left me in dangerous situations with oncoming cars as my car fails to move as expected. This issue occurs sporadically.

I have had 2 intermittent issues since I bought this vehicle brand new. 1) Hard, Jerky shifting from 1-2 or 2-3 gear 2) Huge safety issue regarding loss of power and inability to accelerate from a stop even though the car is on and in drive. This has happened to me multiple times and is very intermittent so it is hard to replicate. This has happened when I am attempted to accelerate from a complete stop and the car begins to move but then does not accelerate at all. Almost as if the powertrain shut off even though it was moving under its ow…

Specifically the model: 2024 Grand Highlander Hybrid Max. immediately new off the dealer lot when driving between 0-40mph, there is a transmission issue. In real life situation of stop and go, and needing to accelerate after making a right turn out of a driveway or stop sign on to flowing traffic, often times it feels as if the gear is shifting too high or skipping causing the car to lose power/ rpm and the vehicle chugs, before skipping back to the correct gearing and accelarating. I'm not sure how to describe it but I feel it is a safety risk…

Over 1.5 years of owning my new 2024 grand Highlander platinum hybrid pro max I have had multiple incidents (6 documented now with toyota) where after coming to a complete stop I go to accelerate and the car shutters, sputters, lunges, and even looses power or goes into “limp mode”. I have been almost hit several times now by oncoming traffic because my grand Highlander completely loses power. It will not accelerate. After 5 seconds I typically hear loud groaning noises followed by two loud bangs and two violent lurches forward before my car fina…

While slowing to a stop on a slight incline (an interstate off-ramp), when almost stopped, the car started bucking as if the brake pedal was being slammed on, then released, slammed on again, then released, and repeated for maybe 2 seconds. I quickly hit the "P" (Park) button to take it out of gear and it stopped. No warning lights or anything came on and it drove perfectly fine afterwards. It felt just like the emergency braking and the car thinks you're going to hit something. It was very strong and jarring. Happened a 2nd time on April 4 in…

Since purchasing this vehicle when I have driven the vehicle and come home the vehicle smells of gas vapor/fumes. It's so bad the entire garage will fill with the vapor. Im afraid the garage will explode. I have to leave the vehicle parked outside for several hours until the smell is gone. This is a known issue for this car as others have complained about the same thing. Dealership has confirmed it is a known problem. They tried o tell me the first time I took it in that it was due to extreme heat in Las Vegas. I explained that our other vehicl…

I live in Arizona and the car has bad gas smell after drive a while(usually between 10-30 minutes) in a hot day (usually afternoon). I took the car to dealership and they replicated the issue and the dealership said Toyota told them it’s due to excessive heat and told us to use better quality gas which we are already getting gas from Chevron and Costco. Seems this is known problem because I saw other grand Highlander owners complained the same issue but Toyota is not doing anything to fix it. They can’t blame on the heat since they are sellin…
